The victories of Tiger Roll, Altior, Frodon and Paisley Park helped provide many Cheltenham highlights but the one horse that I will be taking out of the Festival going forward is Bright Forecast, who finished a staying on third in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.
This Ben Pauling trainee was stepping up in trip for the first time under Rules and was given a waiting ride out the back by Nico De Boinville before keeping on eye-catchingly to grab a place behind City Island and Champ.
He looks a stayer to follow in the future in the colours of the great Aldaniti.
With Flat racing on a hiatus until Friday here are some jumps selections for Wednesday
Peppay Le Pugh is a typical example of how well trainer Dan Skelton can place his horses to best effect.
This gelding was an 0-20 maiden when he was bought for £10,000 at the Goffs UK Spring HIT sale and moved to his yard.
He has subsequently won for chases and on his return to hurdles last time out won at Doncaster this month.
He looks well placed in this novice hurdle as the trainer, who took this contest last year, edges ever closer to 200 winners this season.
When originally going through the entries for today’s racing, a few days ago, I thought it was significant that champion jockey Richard Johnson was already jocked-up on this horse for trainer Polly Gundry, especially as Richard’s mother also has a runner in the race.
Connections have tried just about everything to get Big Time Frank finally into the winner’s enclosure and today he will be ridden by Johnson for the first time and that might make the difference.
He has been runner-up in his past six starts but appeared unlucky to be nailed close home at Exeter last time.
He may be getting long in the tooth at the age of 13 but Brave Spartacus just continues to thrive and is looking today to continue his love affair with Market Rasen.
His exploits at the track include winning the 2015 Summer Plate and a win over course and distance last time out.
This was an easy, front-running victory where he put seven lengths between himself and the runner-up.
The handicapper looks to have been lenient in putting him up only 5lb for that effort, which has allowed trainer Gillian Boanas the opportunity to run him at a slightly lower level than his previous success.
This unexposed five-year-old opened his account at Fontwell last time out by 12 lengths and has been put up 7lb for that victory.
At Fontwell he was given a patient, waiting ride by useful 3lb claimer Stan Sheppard and he may get a similar race set up here again.
Although this is a big field few come here in decent form, whereas the selection arrives here on the back of a personal best. He looks a decent each-way bet.
