I hope everyone is enjoying the festive season and the best part is yet to come -
Boxing Day.
Growing up in the US, Boxing Day was always written in on the calendar as a holiday and I thought that this day was for returning all of the boxes you did not want from Christmas.
Needless to say, my view has changed as I look forward to this more now than Christmas Day because there is wall-to-wall racing action, featuring something for everyone from top class races over jumps to good races on the Flat.
There are 77 races in Britain and Ireland and whatever your traditions are on Boxing Day - whether heading to the races or opening a bottle of champagne and watching them in your pyjamas – good luck and have a fun day!
Lived up to expectations last week by winning for this column at Newbury and I believe that Tom Lacey's charge can go in again in a similar race here.
The race Sir Egbert won was a conditional jockeys' contest and as a consequence he gets in here without a penalty.
Features of his Newbury success were his jumping and big galloping stride, both of which will suit the Market Rasen course. Promising conditional rider Stan Sheppard keeps the ride.
Nicky Henderson has trained the winner of the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase five times and arguably that tally should be six, given Might Bite fell at the last when clear in 2016.
This year he fields Santini, a Grade One winner over hurdles who made an impressive start to chasing with a dominate win the in Grade Two John Francome Novices Chase at Newbury, where he beat Rocky’s Treasure.
The runner-up has since franked the form at Doncaster, winning the Grade Two December Novices’ Chase by 17 lengths.
Henderson said after the Newbury race that Santini will come on a lot for the run and given the calibre of horse he has previously run in this race – such as Might Bite, Bob’s Worth and Long Run - big things can be expected of Santini both on Wednesday and in the future.
Court House is another exciting prospect this winter for John Gosden.
This son of Dawn Approach has not been seen since finishing second in the 10f Handicap on Derby Day at Epsom in June, but he loves the all-weather having won on it twice last winter.
He is the unknown quantity class-wise in this field of stalwarts and should take all of the beating.
This 11-times winner won this £20,000 Conditions race last year and arrives in similar form.
Last season Intisaab ran second in a handicap at Kempton before winning here, and this year he was just a head behind the impressive Encrypted in the Listed Golden Rose Stakes at Lingfield.
That was an encouraging run as it was coming off a four-month break and the track at Lingfield does not suit his run style as much as other tracks do.
He is a horse who loves to be held up and wants a fast pace to chase and with the likes of Kachy, Danzan, and Gulliver among the opposition there should be plenty of early speed.
David Probert rides Intisaab for the first time and currently sits on the 99 winner mark for the year. He has seven rides on Wednesday and Instisaab looks his best chance of reaching a second career century.
