Great Fighter - fifth in the 32Red Casino Handicap:

Great Fighter ran well in fifth in the 1m6f handicap at Haydock on Saturday but the ground was unsuitably heavy and he will be so much more effective on better ground.

Held up, he was ridden to make headway over two-out and edged left over a furlong from home without troubling the leaders.

This tough gelding is handicapped to win a good race.

Last time, Great Fighter did not have the race run to suit when fifth in a 2m handicap at York

Jim Goldie was chatting before the race and told a colleague of mine: "My fellow can win this race, if they go a fast pace."

Unfortunately for the Scotsman, the field went a slow gallop and his gelding was held up in rear. Ridden to close over two-out, the hat-trick-seeking seven-year-old made headway over a furlong out but the leaders did not come back. This Racing UK tracker horse kept on at the same pace and promises a likely victory granted an end-to-end gallop.

There could be a big backend handicap like the Cesarewitch on his agenda next and he is 40-1 for the second leg of the autumn double.

Dakota Gold - Second in the Coopers Marquee Handicap:

Dakota Gold can be a little frustrating going into the stalls and lost ground upon leaving the gates in the handicap over six furlongs at York on Sunday.

The gelding had a blindfold for entry, and was in rear through the first half furlong, but his usual exuberance ensured a good position behind the leaders before halfway.

Challenging on the outside, he drifted to the far side with Major Jumbo and lost by only a neck with the front two clear.

There are more races to be won with the runner-up, especially on better ground and when breaking on level terms.

True, the three-year-old is proven in rain-softened conditions but connections feel he is better on dry ground.

In addition, trainer Michael Dods insists he will be so much better next year.

Scenery - third in the Twinings Novice Auction Maiden Stakes:

Scenery had been well backed ahead of a highly encouraging fourth over 6f at Salisbury prior to his run at Ascot last week.

The son of Elnadim was beaten four lengths at Salisbury by Bombastic, who reapposed on 5lb better terms in the second division of the 6f novice auction at Ascot. In the circumstances Eve Johnson Houghton's juvenile clearly faced a stiff task but ran well in fourth.

He tracked the leaders and was ridden out before he kept on at the same pace and the looks a very likely improver.
