Peter Naughton's tracker horses: No more hitting the bar for Rydan next time

Rydan – fifth in the Watch Racing UK ON BT TV Handicap:

Rydan endured a nightmare passage in the final two furlongs when fifth in the 1m6f handicap at Nottingham on Wednesday.

Travelling well in mid-division, the well-treated six-year-old, who hit the frame several times this term, has improved in cheekpieces of late.

Racing off the same mark as when successful at Salisbury in September last year, the gelding could not gain a clear run at any stage of the final stages, despite moving very well.

When the gap did come, the damage was done and he was a fast-finishing close fifth. Good ground, or softer is fine.

Ice Cool Champs - third in the bet365 Handicap Hurdle:

Ice Cool Champs was not suited by a slow pace when second in the 2m3f handicap hurdle at Wetherby on Saturday.

Philip Hobbs' long distance traveller had finished second in a bumper before he justified strong support over hurdles at Hereford over this trip in deep ground.

He looked well treated off 122 on his handicap debut after a 223-day absence. This son of Robin Des Champs is best when his stamina is tested, so was unable to confirm Hereford form with Diamond Fort, who confounded connections' fears of handling the testing conditions.

Ice Cool Champs remains exciting.

Pistol Park - unseated in the Guinness Handicap Chase:

Across the card, Pistol Park unseated his rider a long way out when reappearing in the extended 2m4f handicap chase at Ayr.

Brian Ellison’s highly regarded six-year-old was held up and had not been asked any questions when blundering at the tenth fence.

He looks well handicapped and has made good progress over fences, including when successful at Newcastle two outings ago.

Equally effective at 2m and 2m4f, this unexposed gelding should soon be winning.
