Graham Clark previews the action on Racing TV as the Debenhams July Festival gets under way at Newmarket and has four selections. Sea Cookie will need to take another step forward again if he is to complete a hat-trick of wins this season, but the manner of his last victory suggests he still has plenty more to offer.
The Tom Clover-trained son of Dark Angel had no problem in defying an opening mark of 79 when registering victory in a six-furlong handicap at the track last month.
Although bumped up 5lb for that win, Jack Callan’s 3lb claim helps offset part of it which should ensure he remains competitive back in deeper waters on conditions which should be ideal.
Ottoman was only just denied victory by an in-form rival at Leicester last time out, but compensation can be gained here.
It was only late on that the son of Acclamation was collared, which was another step in the right direction following a solid enough run at Bath the time before.
His sole previous win came when he was fitted in first time headgear, so if the blinkers - that have replaced the cheekpieces - have the desired effect he should go close off a mark of 53.
Morris Dancer was set a stiff task on his return to action in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, however he looks well placed to build on that effort stepped back up in trip.
While proving no match for the front pair in the seven furlong Group Three at the Royal meeting, the John and Thady Gosden-trained colt stayed on well on to take third against two race-fit rivals.
That was encouraging effort over a trip which was likely to have been on the sharp side, and with race fitness now on his side, he can take a big step forward returned to a mile.
Swiped can show his odds-on defeat eight days ago to be all wrong by making amends when re-united with Rhys Clutterbuck in a first time visor.
After scoring well under Clutterbuck over a mile at Bath off a mark of 65 on his penultimate start, the gelded son of Too Darn Hot never looked like following up off his revised rating of 72 back over the same course and distance.
Given how he appeared slightly outpaced last time out the application of a visor will hopefully help him travel that bit kinder into the business end of the race and help him get back to winning ways.
