It is time to return to
Newbury where there is a really competitive card on for a midweek meet here.
Read on for our Placepot Pointers for those six important races on Wednesday afternoon.
How’s the going?
After a lot of rain on Sunday through to Tuesday, the going has been declared as soft.
Newbury is supposed to be staying dry on the day but there will still be some test for the horses on this track.
The Big Trend
Some say that Nicky
Henderson hasn’t had the best of starts to this season but he is certainly in full swing now and this is where he gets the majority of his success. He has six wins already at this track this season and his strike rate of 33% is some going. The Seven Barrows trainer has six runners at Newbury on Wednesday, all of which are involved in Placepot races.

Placepot Banker
In the third leg of the Tote Placepot, the famous silks of Mr. Kelvin-Hughes will be worn by Richard Johnson aboard ST BARTS (Leg 3, 13:10). The six-year-old’s form coming into the race is very strong and his first outing this season was a brilliant second to Ofalltheginjoints. Prior to that he was third behind Hurricane Harvey at Wincanton who is now a Grade 2 winner and he won a class three at Ascot over the smaller obstacles. He is made to be a chaser and a much improved performance here is on the cards.
Outsiders to Consider
In the final leg of the Placepot, we believe to have found one that could come into the race as a big underdog. FAIRWAY FREDDY (Leg 6, 14:55) has failed to finish outside of the top three on all his starts so far this season and he has some very good figures behind him to support some market attraction. He has been beaten by some chasers who are now rated in the 140s and this left handed track will suit his jumping style as he jumps to the left as well.
Torpedo Leg
The torpedo leg looks most likely to come from the fourth race at Newbury. It is just a three-runner affair and we are siding with the outsider of the lot, CARROLLS MILAN (Leg 4, 13:45). The Fergal O’Brien trained seven-year-old is the one who is open to the most improvement but he is rated 8lbs away from Sensulano and 29lbs away from Magic Of Light. The Jessica Harrington trained mare looks to be on a downward trajectory and once mares start doing that it is very difficult to bring them back. She will need to dig deep to find a performance of old to get up here.
