Frankie Dettori is no longer the world's number one Italian-born jockey, with that honour now belonging to Mirco Demuro, according to the latest Thoroughbred Racing Commentary global rankings. After years as the unchallenged king, Dettori has been caught and overtaken by Japan-based Demuro, 38, who climbs from number five to three after last week's action worldwide, overtaking not only Dettori, who drops one place to fourth, but also Christophe Soumillon, who is also down one, to five.Born in Rome, Demuro is a former five-time Italian champion jockey and has been in top form over recent weeks, showing it again at the weekend, winning a Grade Three on Saturday and the Grade Two Nakayama Kinen the day after on Neorealism. He won the first Japanese Grade One of the year, the February Stakes, on Gold Dream the previous weekend. Now only Ryan Moore and Australian Hugh Bowman are ahead of Demuro. The TRC standings, launched last October, produce rankings not just for jockeys, but also for trainers, owners and stallions. The worldwide top 500 is listed in each category, and the lists are updated weekly, based on a rolling three-year period. The system uses results in all Group and Graded races in each of the major racing nations.
