Moore hoping son and grandson can ride against each other next year

Gary Moore has legged up three sons and a daughter during his career in the training ranks, but in the autumn of 2025 had the pleasure of also handing rides to his grandson, as Toby Moore became the latest of the great racing dynasty to join the professional ranks.
Son of one of the greatest to grace a saddle and Aidan O’Brien’s chief ally Ryan Moore, his grandfather likened the 17-year-old starting out to that of David Beckham’s son becoming a professional footballer, such was the interest generated by his first few outings in the saddle.
However, it gave the elder statesman of the family great pride to watch the young apprentice in action – at a time of the season attentions were returning to the winter jumpers and Ryan Moore was sidelined with a leg injury.
Moore said: “It’s been lovely to give him a few rides and it gave me an interest on the Flat at a time when I didn’t have too many left to run and Ryan was out injured.
“It gave me something to enjoy, seeing him out there. There’s a lot of pride there and I just hope he can progress further.
“He’s got a hell of a lot to try to live up to though with his old man, it would be like being David Beckham’s son in football.”
The younger Moore had registered three winners from his 31 professional rides before getting his own first taste of the treatment table with a collarbone injury which will keep him out of action until the spring.
But that could prove a blessing in disguise, with Moore adding: “Unfortunately it came to a quick end, but maybe that won’t be a bad thing as I felt it might have all been coming a bit soon for him.
“Sadly the poor kid broke his collarbone, but it’s part and parcel of the job. I guess you could say he’s lucky to walk away with a broken collarbone.”
With Ryan Moore now back in action, the prospect of father and son going nose to nose on horseback is a tantalising prospect for the year ahead.
“I suppose inevitably he’s going to ride against Ryan one day and I hope he does for their sake,” continued Moore.
“It’s happened with David Egan and his old man (John Egan). I have enjoyed it watching Toby, it’s given me an interest and something fun to watch.”
