Grade One aspirations for Imperial Merlin

Grade One aspirations for Imperial Merlin

Although enjoying the summer of his dreams on the Flat thanks to the all-conquering sprinter Highfield Princess, John Quinn may have found the horse who could one day return him to the winner’s enclosure on the big jumping days in the form of the exciting Imperial Merlin.
It has been some time since Character Building was a standing dish in the top staying handicaps and Countrywide Flame was landing blows in the 2012 Fighting Fifth before placing in the Champion Hurdle a few months later for the Malton handler.
But together with Imperial Racing – whose founder Ian Robinson tasted Cheltenham Gold Cup glory with Imperial Commander almost 13 years ago – they appear to have unearthed a rough diamond that has the potential to be polished into the north’s next Grade One standard bearer.
The son of Kalanisi has quietly gone about his business with the minimum of fuss since suffering a two-length defeat at Wetherby on debut.
He quickly corrected the record by winning a Sedgefield bumper by nine lengths the following month, while the margin of victory has only got greater since returning over hurdles this season winning a pair of novice contests by a combined 31 lengths.
A chaser of the future, there is still plenty for Imperial Merlin to learn, with Robinson believing the gelding is “well above average” as he assesses the five-year-old’s key characteristics.
He said: “He’s a lovely horse and a half-brother to Secret Investor so he will jump fences in time.
“The problem is he is really green and I think you’ve seen when he comes to the last hurdle, at Catterick he took off and he was still green and at Newcastle he read the advertising boards and was doing anything but concentrate on going forward.
“He has a very easy way of going, he’s almost asleep when he races which is perfect and he keeps more than enough for himself.
“He wouldn’t over-exert himself at home either, he very much just does enough, so how much he is capable of doing is very much unknown at the moment.
“Unfortunately the horse who should have challenged at Newcastle ran through the rails and from then on everything was a formality, which didn’t really help him because he was there for experience and there was no opposition from a long way out. He just needs as much experience we can get into him.”
And experience seems to be the optimum word as connections plot a slow and steady path through the season, keen to keep him close to home for the time being, before contemplating testing the horse’s mettle in some hot races in the spring – providing he keeps ticking the right boxes.
“I think the plan is to just keep him north for the next couple of runs and then decide what we would like to do in the spring – but there is no doubt he is well above average, he’s a very nice horse,” continued Robinson.
“I don’t think he’ll really want deep ground so we might try to get him out between Christmas and New Year and that means when the deep ground comes in January and February we’re not forced to race him.
“I have the belief they are all handicappers until they prove otherwise. Now I think he could well prove otherwise and he is probably Graded class.
“It really depends when the penny drops because really the penny hasn’t dropped. He’s still very green, very naïve and still needs to learn how to race to be honest – what he’s doing so far he’s doing on raw ability.
“So in the back of my mind it would be a good handicap off his first mark or the one race I did have in mind was the Grade One Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree.
“If you look at that race historically the Irish don’t come as they tend to head to Punchestown so it does have an easier look to it than some of the others.
“But that’s something myself and John haven’t really discussed yet and is something for further down the line – we’ll just take it one step at a time.”

REPLAY from Meydan: Magnitude wins Dubai World Cup 2026 as Calandagan & Ombudsman shine

Re-live the best of the action from the 30th anniversary of the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan! US raider Magnitude captured the feature $20 million Dubai World Cup, getting the better of hot favourite Forever Young. Elsewhere, Europe's champion racehorse Calandgan recorded his fifth Group One win in the Dubai Sheema Classic, whilst Godolphin's Ombudsman ran out a comfortable scorer of the Dubai Turf.

Magnitude captures Dubai World Cup | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

When Dubai welcomed the world to old Nad Al Sheba Racetrack for the first time in 1996, 'America's Horse' Cigar repelled what seemed an inevitable challenge from compatriot Soul of the Matter to help cement Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's goal of creating a worldwide spectacle in the Emirates. The eyes of the racing public were on sprawling Meydan Racecourse for the 30th renewal of the event - at $12 million now worth triple the original pot - and Forever Young, looking to complete an unprecedented sequence of the world's three richest races on dirt. Ultimately it was not meant to be, as Magnitude took control right out of the stalls and Forever Young - doing his best to reel him in - ran out of real estate. Having missed the G1 Saudi Cup - won with less energy expenditure than in 2025 by Forever Young - Magnitude prepped with a soft victory in Grade 3 company and was a reasonably fresh horse. He hit the ground running from gate one, going along smoothly for Jose Ortiz while tracked along by Forever Young and Saudi Cup third Tumbarumba. Still travelling strongly into the final 800 metres, Magnitude was asked for acceleration nearing the entrance to the straight and left Forever Young a bit flat-footed, putting about two lengths on the reigning Breeders' Cup Classic winner. Still clear at the furlong marker, Magnitude rolled away from the inside, but the best Forever Young could do was to get to the Not This Time colt's tail at the wire. Meydaan won a photo for third, well behind the top two. “We knew we had a very good horse, but obviously Forever Young is the best horse in the world,” said winning jockey Jose Ortiz. As for race strategy, Ortiz added: “We left all the options open - if he jumps well we can go to the lead, if somebody jumps better than him, just sit off, maybe behind the speed. He didn't have a running start, but he jumped well and I knew it was time to go. I asked him to run and he was there for me.” Added winning trainer Steve Asmussen, who took the 2008 World Cup with Curlin and sent out Gun Runner to be second in 2017: “What an incredible win. We just wanted to let him to run his race from point A to point B. The horse is running with a lot of confidence and that gave us confidence. It unfolded just how we wanted it to.” Ortiz said the celebrations will be rather muted ahead of an early morning flight back to the United States on Sunday. "I'm not used to racing late at night under lights," he said. "I'm hungry, I want to go and eat! We fly pretty early tomorrow so I'd rather wait and celebrate with my family and friends. Maybe we'll have a cookout." Forever Young's trainer Yoshito Yahagi believes that the Meydan track "doesn't seem to suit" his horse, having finished third in the Dubai World Cup last year. He did win the G2 UAE Derby on the track in 2024, but it was a workmanlike success that rated below the rest of his performances at three. “Everything went the way we planned but the winner was good today," said Forever Young's regular partner Ryusei Sakai. Calandagan lands fifth Group One with Dubai Sheema Classic triumph | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Calandagan showed why he is officially the best horse in the world when running down long-time front-runner West Wind Blows in the Dubai Sheema Classic. Francis-Henri Graffard’s five-year-old suffered defeat in this contest 12 months ago but would end the year top of the world standings after a winning run which began on home soil at Saint-Cloud and would then involve an Ascot double before ending the year with an historic triumph in the Japan Cup. It was Simon and Ed Crisford’s West Wind Blows who slipped the field who raced in single file for the majority of the contest. Rounding the bend for home Calandagan had just Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Ethical Diamond behind him with Rossa Ryan still going strong aboard West Wind Blows. But an ice-cool Mickael Barzalona refused to panic and his mount soon began closing the distance with a sublime finishing effort. He would pass his rival to earn a pat down the neck from his jockey, registering a three-quarters of a length success and teeing-up an exciting summer. Graffard, celebrating his first winner in Dubai, said: “I’m relieved, the winter was long and he’s a world champion now and has a big reputation so we just needed to start and get the season going. “It was a big race today and it’s always hard to have a horse completely ready for a race like that, I said to Mickael he might need the race. It was tactical and painful to watch but he’s a champion. “Mickael and him get on well now but during the race he was a little on and off the bridle and on the last bend he was asking him to go. I think he needed the run and to get going, but it is now five Group Ones in a row and he’s a real champion so I’m glad Princess Zahra (owner) decided to start the season here.” He went on: “I don’t know where we will go but he knows how to travel and enjoys his life. “He’s a real champion and today was a big goal and my first winner in Dubai so I’m very happy. “He’s important for the sport and a flagship horse so we won’t be afraid to travel.” The Sheema Classic serves as a ‘win and you’re in’ for the Breeders’ Cup Turf which will this year be run at Keeneland and while accepting that could fit into Calandagan’s schedule, the one certainty seems that international competition will definitely be on the agenda. Graffard added: “The Breeders’ Cup could be an option and I don’t see why not, but it might depend if we go back for the Japan Cup again. They are very hard races to win and American tracks are quite tight also, so it might not really suit his abilities. “The Cox Plate could be a possible especially this year at Flemington which is a big galloping track, but we don’t want to be too greedy and we need to think about it and respect the horse. “I said to Princess Zahra I hope your passport is OK, because we are going to travel.” #horseracing #horses #dubairacing #dubaiworldcup Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Following the victory of Lewis Carroll at The Curragh, Aidan O'Brien reflected on Albert Einstein's sixth-placed finish on his seasonal return in the Listed Gladness Stakes. 7/2 favourite for the 2000 Guineas before the race, the three-year-old is now a 20/1 shot for the first British Classic of the season and thew master of Ballydoyle hinted that his future may well over sprinting trips. Godolphin's Ombudsman stamps class in Dubai Turf | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Ombudsman delivered a spellbinding performance to make a winning return in the Dubai Turf at Meydan. John and Thady Gosden’s son of Night Of Thunder was one of the stars of 2024, landing the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot before adding the Juddmonte International in a season where he also finished runner-up in the Eclipse and Champion Stakes. Kept in training by Godolphin, this race was picked out by Sheikh Mohammed as the ideal starting point, a race the Clarehaven training team of course have won three times in the past with Lord North since 2021. William Buick was in no rush in the saddle in the early stages but cruised stylishly into contention rounding the bend for home. Once Buick unleashed an inch of rein the response was deadly as Ombudsman stormed to the front and carried on galloping to lay down an early statement for the season ahead. In an all-British one-two it was Simon and Ed Crisford’s Quddwah that filled the runner-up spot, but he was ultimately no match for the two-length winner. John Gosden said: “I was delighted with him in every way and he’s a big and strong horse, he’s five now and fully matured. “I liked that he was fresh but didn’t pull and William said he listened and settled and they did the usual thing of going quick then pulling it up on the bend. William crept close and I think where he was correct was by staying wide and giving away ground because when they straightened up he had a clear run.” Paddy Power handed Ombudsman a quote of 25-1 for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but for the time being Royal Ascot is a possible next port of call. Gosden added: “He was probably 90 per cent today and I think it is one where the race will tighten him and bring him on, but there is a bit of a gap now before Royal Ascot because they don’t put a lot of these races on. “He’s come here off a long winter but we’ve been very happy with his training. I think you are looking Prince of Wales’s Stakes again and the Eclipse, Juddmonte International, those are the obvious big summer races. “But William was hinting if you did want to go further at the end of the year, over a mile and a half, you could. I did talk about a Japan Cup last year but if you remember a certain horse called Calandagan was going for it, that old gelding, and I thought we might stay away from him. “I’m sure he will go to stud at the end of the year so let’s be bold with him and Sheikh Mohammed is keen to take things on.” Buick was keen to heap praise on Ombudsman’s training team after securing his first victory in the Dubai Turf. He said: “Ombudsman showed there on his first run of the season just what he can do. It was a very competitive field and some of the runners have already had runs this winter and I was very pleased with him. “It was how we hoped it would happen, it was very smooth and he’s hopefully got an exciting year ahead. “He was exactly how I hoped he would be and credit to John and Thady who have had him in impeccable shape all winter and he’s never missed a beat. He’s been on target every step of the way and I’ve been involved riding him in some of his work as well, so a huge credit to them. “He shipped over in great shape and when I rode him on Thursday morning we all knew he was in business.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Native Approach powers to Al Quoz glory | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Native Approach was a surprise winner of the Al Quoz sprint. It was Connor Beasley who was aboard Ahmad bin Harmash’s winner and he said: “He’s a bundle of speed and when I first sat on him at the start of the season I did say to the boss he feels like a sprinter. “He puts his heart on his sleeve every morning, he’s not easy. Once the Japanese horse came to me tonight he was very determined. “It’s a great team to be a part of. I think this is my eighth season with Ahmad and I came over here as second jockey to him and it all just fell into place, right place, right time. “He’s been a big supporter and put plenty of trust in me and it just shows when a team clicks it goes through to the horses as well as the people as well.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits!
