2.25 York: Heathen (e/w)
He represents our syndicate, The Horse Watchers, here and returns to turf off a 13lb lower mark than the one he ran off when fourth at Southwell in April
This six-year-old goes very well fresh, so we have deliberately given him a break since that outing, and we always planned to bring him back onto turf from his much lower mark.
He did a nice piece of work on grass last week in preparation for this race and, providing he gets a good gallop to aim at, which I think is on the cards here, and Serena Brotherton can get the timings right, then I think he’s got a big each-way chance.
3.35 York: Tuco Salamanca (e/w)
This is seriously competitive, with 22 runners heading to post, but lots of the bookmakers will be offering extra places, and Tuco Salamanca is a contender who I still think has more to offer.
He has been very consistent this year and has not finished out of the first four in his past seven outings. Since returning to turf, his form is strong, most notably his outing over six furlongs at Ascot two starts ago when he faced subsequent Doncaster winner Up The Pace.
He ran well in defeat there and is a few pounds higher now, but I think he could be drawn on the favourable part of the track as there’s a lot of pace forecast from the middle stalls (he’s drawn in stall 11), and he therefore might be at an advantage when challenging. He’s another who I think has a good each-way chance with the extra places on offer.
4.45 York: Obelix (nap)
This five-year-old is my nap of the day on Saturday. He is a talented handicapper on his day, and what he needs is a strong pace to aim at over a mile, and to get into a race late on following a strong gallop.
I think he should get that here, as there are several front runners, including Garden Oasis, Ey Up Its The Boss and Golden Pharaoh who should all ensure this is a strongly-run contest, and that could set things up nicely for Obelix to arrive late on the scene.
He ran nicely when fourth on his latest start at Thirsk and he finished behind subsequent Epsom winner Mirsky. They didn’t go quick enough for him there, though, and he tried to come from the rear of the field. He ran on, and was only beaten just over two lengths, but the pace just didn’t collapse for him.
This race should set up ideally for him, and he’s also got a decent draw in stall seven.
