Martin Dixon's Saturday tips: "Everything looks right for him"

Top tipster and pundit Martin Dixon shares his three best bets on Saturday, including two at Aintree, live on Racing TV.

1.15 Aintree: Javert Allen 

Javert Allen really impressed me when he first went chasing two years ago. He won his first two starts over fences, at Chepstow and Newbury, and his jumping was terrific both times.

He’s at his very best when he’s allowed to bowl along and be ridden positively on a flat, quick track over two miles, and that’s exactly what he gets for his comeback on Saturday. He also has a proven record of going well fresh.

He didn’t manage to win last season, but the pick of his form was a second at Newbury behind Ryan’s Rocket, who went on to win the Red Rum at the Grand National meeting. He’s now down to a mark of 124, 2lb lower than he was that day. That reads particularly well and suggests he’s well handicapped.

Jane Williams’ horses are in good form. She’s already had a couple of winners on their reappearance this autumn, and most of her runners have been running with real credit.

3.00 Aintree: Heather Honey (E/W)

Heather Honey has progressed really well through the handicap hurdle ranks over the last 18 months or so. She started from a very low base and has now won five handicap hurdles, and she was very consistent all through last season, including in some warm races.

She came back four weeks ago at Hexham and ran very much as if she needed it, getting tired from the final flight. That run should have put her spot on. She now has a run under her belt and gets in here off a very light weight, so I think she’s likely to be back to her best.

This race looks a bigger target for Heather Honey than it does for some of her rivals. She’s a consistent mare with a really good attitude, she stays well, and she’s suited by decent ground, which she’ll get on Saturday.

3.25 Doncaster: Alfred Wincham (NAP)

Alfred Wincham is a very lightly-raced four-year-old and he looked a completely different proposition on his first try on soft ground at York a month ago. He couldn’t have won more easily, travelling strongly and quickening clear readily to win by eight lengths.

The handicapper has put him up 13lb for that, but even so, I think he’s very much one to keep on the right side of on soft ground.

He’s a strong stayer. His York win came over a little further than this, and he’s already won a bumper. I don’t see the drop in trip as a problem, though. With a big field, a strong gallop likely and fairly testing conditions at the back end of the season at Doncaster, this should be a proper test of stamina.

He’s improving quickly, and he has a very good pedigree that he’s only just starting to live up to. It’s not out of the question that he turns into a stakes-class performer under these conditions.

This is a very competitive race on paper, but everything looks right for him to take another step forward, and he’s very much a handicapper to keep on side on soft ground.
