I've gone for two at each-way prices at
Fairyhouse on Saturday. It's been a pretty dry spell of weather in the region and, while the ground is forecast to be soft to heavy, there's fresh ground for both the hurdle and chase tracks, and it will not be bottomless by any means.
There is no racing on Ireland on Sunday, so it would be nice to greet Saturday night with a few beers paid for by a winner or two.
Be lucky.
11.30 Fairyhouse: Peckham Springs
This may well go to Ilmig, who looks likely to go off favourite, but I like the each-way claims of Peckham Springs, one of a laudable few horses named in honour of Only Fools And Horses.
Both of these horses were sent off 9-4 on their hurdling debuts but Ilmig was far more professional, with Peckham Springs putting in a terrible round of jumping under a 7lb claimer.
Adam Short takes over and the horse should have more know-how now; all told he ran remarkably well to finish third at Punchestown.
He was not a bad sort on the Flat and I feel the selection will prove more of a two-miler than Ilmig. You know it makes sense.
1.37 Fairyhouse: Keep The Peace
It's fair to say the form of this one's Limerick run last time is working out terribly. She was beaten 26 lengths and never really travelled, so why can she win this?
Firstly, she's trained by a master in Gavin Cromwell; secondly, she is only having her second handicap start with Johnny Moore taking over; thirdly, she now has cheekpieces; and finally, she is really stoutly bred, with improvement likely if afforded time and distance. She did finish with a bit left in the tank at Limerick.
