James Tate wants testing ground if Hey Gaman is to take Dewhurst test

James Tate will be keeping a close eye on the Newmarket weather over the coming days ahead of Hey Gaman's possible run in next Saturday's Darley Dewhurst Stakes.

Hey Gaman was beaten just a neck by Seahenge in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last month, having won the Denford Stakes at Newbury on his previous outing.

The New Approach colt was partnered by Frankie Dettori as he worked over six furlongs at Headquarters on Saturday morning, finishing just ahead of his lead horse at the line.

Tate was satisfied with Hey Gaman's work effort and while he would like to run in next week's seven-furlong Group One, the handler wants testing conditions, with the Racing  Post Trophy at Doncaster an alternative option on October 28.

He said: "He worked nicely but we didn't need to do much today as he only ran in the Champagne Stakes three weeks ago and the Group One is on Saturday.

"A decision will be made in the week and he will either go for the Dewhurst or the Racing Post Trophy. It needs to be soft for him to run in the Dewhurst as the likes of Seahenge could outspeed him again.

"If it is soft we will look forward to running him, if not we will go to the Racing Post Trophy, but he really must have it softer than good.

"Frankie said he was very pleased and he was glad he sat on him as he takes a little bit of knowing. He settled nicely as in the past he has been a bit keen.

"We would not have problem getting the mile (at Doncaster) and that might be our favoured option if it's not soft here on Saturday."
