James Tate plans to keep Hey Gaman to soft ground following Newmarket romp

Trainer James Tate feels the prevailing soft ground was the key to Hey Gaman's impressive victory at Newmarket on Saturday.

The talented young handler has always held the son of New Approach in high regard, but he disappointed in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the July Stakes at Newmarket.

He returned to the July Course for a three-runner conditions race over the weekend and stormed five lengths clear of Windsor Castle runner-up Roussel.

"The key to him is soft ground," said Tate.

"I knew I had two juveniles head and shoulders above the rest, Invincible Army and him, but I couldn't work out what was going wrong with him.

"After Saturday it would appear clear that he needs cut in the ground, so we'll go wherever we can get it either over six or seven furlongs.

"It's hard to know what he achieved at Newmarket, the other two can't have run to form with him winning like that, but he'll go back up in class.

"He's in the Gimcrack, he'll be entered in the Acomb and every black type race over six and seven and we'll just run when it's soft."
