Pontefract is a track I generally like to bet at and I’m hoping two of my selections there on Wednesday can build on their recent back-to-form runs and that a popular course specialist can get back to winning ways.
2.20 Pontefract: The New Marwan
Hasn’t always been the most consistent but, having dropped to his lowest handicap mark, he landed a similar event at Wolverhampton last time. Eireann Cagney rode on that occasion and clearly gets on very well with him. The combination are reunited.
The New Marwan did most of his racing at Chester for his previous owner but has a win at Hamilton so can clearly handle an uphill finish.
He is drawn better than some of his main rivals in what is a competitive event of its type but is still 2lb below a mark he has won off in the past. If he is in the same form as most of the Richard Fahey yard, he will go pretty close.
4.50 Pontefract: King Of Tonga
Went down by a short head at Beverley last time and has a good chance of going one better off the same mark here. That was his best effort for a while and came after a wind op and two-month break.
He is clearly well-handicapped and has a decent draw in 4 for one who races close to the pace. He should be able to get on the lead with So Grateful. He goes well on easy ground should prove difficult to pass.
5.20 Pontefract: Corinthia Knight
Has an extremely good record at Pontefract despite three unplaced efforts this season. A closer look at his recent runs reveals a line can be put through the past two, and his first run this season was a promising fifth place.
He has dropped 5lb in those three runs and won this race last year off a 15lb higher mark. I am hoping he hasn’t deteriorated that much. Corinthia Knight was well backed when taking the spoils last year so keep an eye on him in the market.
