The Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York was a fantastic four days of action, and thankfully this column produced a few winners, but it looked as though Alfred Boucher was going to cap a successful week in style when he hit the front close home in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor.
In my opinion, Frankie Dettori gave Trawlerman one of the best tactical rides of his career to score from his wide draw, and showed he’s not losing his strength, either, when getting his mount back up to win after being headed.
The debate about where Baaeed goes will rage for another week or so, and I am now firmly in the Arc camp as I believe there is nothing to lose by trying.
I had to turn my attentions to summer jumping to find some bets to Tuesday, and I am hoping these three at Bangor will go close. Best of luck.
Nicky Henderson has persevered with Lelantos perhaps longer than may have been expected as he has certainly taken a while to come good.
Patience has paid off, though, and the six-year-old is a staying handicapper on very good terms with himself at the moment having won three of his past four starts but has only been raised 8lb in total for those efforts, which looks lenient.
He beat one of his rivals here, Mr Yeats, by a length and a half over this course and distance last time out, but victory was more comfortable than that margin suggests, so I doubt the form will be reversed on just 2lb worse terms here.
He clearly acts well at Bangor and gets on well with Nathan Brennan, who is on board again this afternoon, so there are plenty of positives.
Dan Skelton has a long history of improving horses that have lost their form for other trainers and plummeted down the handicap as a result, but Courtandbould is a little different in that he has come from one of the top trainers in the game, Fergal O’Brien, who he won four races for.
It will be quite a feather in Skelton’s cap if he could get this eight-year-old back to form and he has taken the usual step in giving his new recruit a wind op ahead of his stable debut.
Courtandbould has never raced in a 0-110 handicap and has a very good conditional in Tristan Durrell taking off a valuable 5lb.
Durrell has been riding winners for the yard this summer and could be a rider to watch this autumn. Connections needed to something to get back Courtandbould back to form, and athough switching from the O’Brien yard is a bold move, the market will no doubt give us a view as to whether their decision will pay off.
Has been in good form since returning from an absence and deserves a win after going very close on his past two starts.
He looked like he was going to score throughout the race at Uttoxeter last time out, but The Turtle Said, who looks one to follow for Fergal O’Brien, ran him down close home.
Bridge Road has gone up 2lb for that outing but that may underestimate the strength of that run, and he looks well enough weighted to break his maiden here.
