Our pundit and tipster Dave Nevison likes the look of Friday evening's card at Pontefract and has a strong fancy in the final race. Enjoy further action from Haydock, Down Royal and Kilbeggan live on Racing TV and Racing TV Extra.
I have decided to seek the bigger-field handicaps and a punting evening at Pontefract to set up the weekend. My best bet is in the last, so hopefully we can end the day on a high.
With several meetings on Friday, jockeys are spread all across the country and Poet’s Dawn is the only runner here who is partnered by the same rider as last time. Ella McCain gets on well with the six-year-old and has already won twice on him this year.
Poet’s Dawn is a Beverley specialist, but I’m hoping the stiff uphill finish at Pontefract may enable him to show his best. He’s been pretty consistent recently and, with a decent draw, should be able to go well at an each-way price in a race which by its nature has no unexposed types.
Sire Anglais is in a rich vein of form at present and runs very well at this type of track.
He is drawn in stall 2 and will have to wait for gaps if he stays in that lane but, given this 6f event is set to be run at a strong pace, horses may be tiring and those gaps may well come for him.
Rowan Scott has won on him recently and the gelding has won off higher marks than this in the past. He has a lot going for him and can hopefully register another win.
He might be the bet of the evening.
King Of Stars is drawn in stall 1 so should be able to bag pole position if desired - and does not seem to have a rival who wants to battle for the lead.
Everything went wrong for him last time - including losing a shoe behind Tis Marvellous at Ascot – and dropping his mark, even if by just 1lb, wasn’t necessary. He’s been in good form since he won at Bath earlier this season when making all and all ground seems to come alike for him.
