Our betting expert is pleased to see domestic jumps racing back and shares a trio of fancies for Tuesday’s action from Carlisle and Catterick, both live on Racing TV. It almost feels as though there has been a seasonal break since I last looked at the jumps cards, but they are back and hopefully we will now have a clear run through to Cheltenham.
I am going with three well-fancied and lightly-raced chasers to try to get the week off to a flyer.
There are very few novices chases run over marathon trips, but this extended three miles and two furlongs is just about the minimum test for this eight-year-old.
He was a regular long-distance traveller over hurdles as Paul Nicholls sought out long-distance events for him, and it is no surprise that the master trainer has found a race with ideal conditions now. He sends just one runner up to Carlisle.
This horse was moving into the places when falling at Chepstow on chasing debut and the stiff track here will suit perfectly, while a small field will give him the space to hone his jumping in the early part of the race. He won his only point to point before joining Nicholls and I am not anticipating him being a slow learner.
He was a decent winner for this column on his chasing debut and I am happy to stick with him to follow up.
Abandonments have meant the form hasn’t had time to work out, but I believe that he won a decent race for the grade and that winners will come from his race. I am hopeful that he remains well-handicapped off 6lbs higher.
Jack Valentine steps up in trip here and I expect that to be a positive. I will not be concerned if jockey Charlie Deutsch decides to make the running here - in fact I am hoping he does, as Deutsch is proving himself an excellent rider from the front these days.
He may have been harshly assessed by the hurdles handicapper when asked to begin his British career off a mark of 136, and it took him a few runs and a huge drop in the weights to eventually win from a mark of 100.
He won his only chase start as well off that same mark, going in at Ludlow in a decent field for the grade and he looked one to follow after that. He has reverted to hurdles in the meantime and has improved on his win. Even off 10lbs higher than his chase success, he looks to be well in still.
