Henry Candy keen to give Limato time between races

Henry Candy feels he ran Limato back too soon in the Lennox Stakes on Tuesday.

The dual Group One winner faded to finish fourth at Goodwood, admittedly beaten only half a length, but Candy felt he failed to finish off his race – 17 days after he claimed second place in the July Cup at Newmarket.

"I think we ran probably a week too soon," the Wantage handler told Racing UK.

"He's always wanted a long time between races in the past and I thought as an old boy now he might be a bit stronger, but he didn't quite see the race out.

"He didn't blow much afterwards and seemed absolutely fine. He just wants freshening up and probably wants four weeks between races.

"I gave him a week on the lunge after Newmarket to freshen him up, but he's a cheerful horse and he's very hard to judge.

"Obviously you don't want to gallop him at home too much and I wouldn't have anything to go with him so you just have to mind him.

"He seemed absolutely fine, but I think we have to make it a hard-and-fast rule not to run him too quick again.

"I think we'll go to Chantilly again for the Prix de la Foret – he loves it there.

"He might just have lost a yard of pace, but over seven furlongs when he's fresh and well he's as good as ever."
