Harry Bentley: Capla is tempting at Newmarket

I have got a decent book of rides on Saturday at Newmarket and Capla Temptress lines up in the Group Three german-thoroughbred.com Sweet Solera Stakes, which is the feature event on the July Course.

The daughter of Lope De Vega went through the soft ground well last time when she won over course and distance and she is now two from two over seven furlongs.

I finished second to her last time when I rode La Diva for Roger Varian, and she went to lead two furlongs out and put a good bit if distance on us all. It is hard to know the true worth of that race, as nothing much has run subsequently, but it rode like a good one.

Capla Temptress is 13lb wrong in the weights with favourite Dance Diva, according to official ratings, as we all run off 9st. I would say it is a tricky spot as Dance Diva is a Listed winner and ran well last time when second to Nyaleti at Ascot.

Al Shaqab’s Mayyasah won a maiden on her seasonal debut at Newbury, which usually has strong maidens, and Godolphin’s Poetic Charm also looks dangerous.

I know I rode in her race when she won at Newmarket but I was way back on George Peckham’s Janabiya, who got a bump, so I can’t really tell you much. Just as an aside, she could make in to a nice filly, but she needs time as a daughter of Nathaniel.

That Is The Spirit is quite a consistent sort but is 4lbs higher than when he won last time in the BBAG-Sales.de Handicap. He has won off 105 before, however, so you would hope that he could squeeze a little bit more out. David O’Meara’s stable looks go have turned a bit of a corner recently, and he could be thereabouts in what looks a competitive contest. The fact that he goes on the soft ground is a huge positive, but Newmarket drains quite well so it could be goodish by Saturday afternoon.

I can’t tell you too much about Altyn Orda, who I have never sat on and who has never raced. The daughter of Kyllachy is an early foal – she was born on January 30 - so that might help our cause, but none of her 10 rivals in the BBAG Premier Yearling Sales Maiden Fillies’ Stakes has run either so we’re all a bit in the dark.

You want to give your horse a good introduction to the game in a maiden. You don’t want to make it hard for them and leave a mark. They have got to enjoy their racing, so we will see how we go.

On Sunday I have three rides, and I like Rosedale Topping who could go well. I have ridden 14 winners from 45 runners for Ed Vaughan in the last five years, which is a pretty decent strike-rate and his stable is in good form.
