Group One winners among high-class entry for Ballyroan Stakes

Group One winners among high-class entry for Ballyroan Stakes

Leopardstown welcome Grant Thornton back to continue their sponsorship of the Group Three Ballyroan Stakes on August 4.
Group One heroine La Petite Coco provided trainer Paddy Twomey with a memorable first win at the highest level and she heads the entries for the Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes along with another Group One-winning filly, Dermot Weld’s dual Irish St Leger victor Search For A Song.
Speaking on behalf of Grant Thornton, Sasha Kerins, Partner, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our sponsorship of the Group Three Ballyroan Stakes with Leopardstown and providing our support to the thoroughbred industry.”
A total of 30 entries have been received for the valuable 1m4f contest at Leopardstown and Twomey is responsible for four other notable entries. The Twomey-trained Rosscarbery finished third behind La Petite Coco before her high-profile disqualification from that race and has subsequently won the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Stanerra Stakes at Leopardstown.
Beamish is unbeaten in all three outings for the trainer, two of which have come this season, while Earl Of Tyrone has completed a hat-trick of wins since April. Twomey’s other potential representative is Listed winner and Group Three-placed Rumbles Of Thunder.
La Petite Coco is being geared towards a tilt at a number of major targets in the latter half of the season, including the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Longines Irish Champions Weekend.
Twomey commented: “La Petite Coco is in good form since winning the Pretty Polly. We’ve won our Group 1 now but the Grant Thornton Ballyroan is an option if we were looking for suitable prep race into the big autumn races and that’s why she was entered, with that possibility in mind.”
Of Rosscarbery, who has five wins under her belt this season including the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Stanerra Stakes at Leopardstown this month, he added: “Rosscarbery won the last day with her Group 3 penalty so she’s proved she can operate at that sort of level with a penalty. She has been well since and the mile and a half would probably be her optimum trip. It is a race that would definitely be suitable for her.”
Beamish is the most lightly raced of the five Twomey entries having had just three starts so far. The four-year-old old registered a Leopardstown maiden victory last year and has added two successes this term. The trainer said: “Beamish is in great form. He’s a very progressive horse. He’s ran three times, he’s won three times and that would be a suitable race for him if it fell into place on the day. He’s four but has low mileage so he’s still improving.
“I think Rumbles Of Thunder is versatile anywhere from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half,” added Twomey of a filly who was a close fourth at Group 2 level yesterday (Sunday). “She’s that sort of standard and if things fell into place for her, she has shown that she is that level and we will see closer to the time where they all fit in.”
Of Earl Of Tyrone, who has been another revelation this season, Twomey concluded: “Earl Of Tyrone has been very progressive all year winning his last three, from his maiden to a premier handicap to a Listed race. He’s a nice horse who stays well and he’s a potential runner too.”
Dermot Weld is the most successful trainer in the race with 10 wins to date and as well as Search For A Song he has also given the option to Azallya, Duke De Sessa and Falcon Eight.
Impressive recent Curragh winner Aikhal and Group 2 victor Lily Pond, who had Rumbles Of Thunder behind yesterday (Sunday), head Aidan O’Brien’s seven entries, while his son Joseph is represented by Cleveland, Gear Up and Inuit, while Donnacha O’Brien may run Moon Daisy and Simply Glorious.
Fresh from her success in the Irish Oaks, Jessica Harrington could search for another big prize with Forbearance, Sandhurst and Taipan her potential runners and Ger Lyons has also entered a nice team headed by Thunder Kiss, who was third to La Petite Coco in the Pretty Polly.
The Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes is part of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend Free Entry Scheme, meaning that connections of the winner will have their cost of running in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger reimbursed. In all, seven of the Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes entrants qualify: Azallya, Falcon Eight, Search For A Song (Dermot Weld), Sandhurst (Jessica Harrington), Bluegrass, Martinstown (Aidan O’Brien) and Thunder Kiss (Ger Lyons).

Shergar's record 10-length Derby win - watch the moment that made him a legend 👑

One of the most breathtaking displays of raw talent in Derby history. Shergar, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, won the 1981 Epsom Derby by ten lengths — a record margin that still stands today. It was a performance that made Shergar the most famous racehorse in the world — before his story took a tragic turn when he was stolen from his stud farm in County Kildare by masked gunmen in 1983, and was never seen again. #horseracing #epsom #derby #shergar Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Estrange shows Group 1 credentials with impressive reappearance | Full Race | Racing TV

Estrange looked a class apart on paper ahead of her defence of the Betway Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes at Carlisle and so it proved on the track itself. David O’Meara’s grey mare was due to run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the autumn, but was ruled out of the race with a minor setback, after which she recovered to run at Ascot on Champions Day when second to Kalpana. That form was head and shoulders above any of her rivals in this Group Three – rescheduled from its usual home of Haydock – and meant she was sent off the 8-11 favourite. Having raced keen through the early stages, Danny Tudhope eventually got her settled and when Azaniya injected some pace into the race she was briefly a little out of her ground. Like the class horse she is, though, she moved through the gears effortlessly and pulled a length and a half clear of Waardah, with subsequent quotes ranging from 20-1 to 33s for this year’s Arc. O’Meara said: “I think physically she looks like she has improved from four to five. She looked bigger and rangier when she was walking around the paddock. “You know Minnie Hauk (winner of the Yorkshire Oaks with Estrange second) is back for more this year, as is Kalpana, so we’ll need to have improved. But on that showing she has and it will put her in the mix. “If you don’t bring your A game to these races you are not going to win, but she has not let us down.” He went on: “October (Arc) is a long way off, but she’s in. She would be in the Lancashire Oaks and she could come back to 10 furlongs for the Pretty Polly in Ireland, but the Lancashire Oaks worked well for her last year. “But the Pretty Polly would come under consideration, especially if the ground was slow over here.” Estrange is owned by Cheveley Park Stud, whose managing director Chris Richardson said: “Look at her, she is hardly blowing. She doesn’t even look like she has had a run really. “We will probably go to York for the Yorkshire Oaks again. She is in Ireland, too, but it is a question of where the rain is. “That (Arc) is the dream, yes. She has done it very nicely and she has another year under her belt. She has done well physically and improved.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Washington Heights impresses with another Carlisle win | Full Race | Racing TV

Washington Heights returned to winning ways when making nearly all the running in the Betway Achilles Stakes at Carlisle. A classy performer at his best, he was last successful at York in Listed company in July and had struggled in higher grades since, albeit twice at Group One level. Back down to Listed class in a race rerouted from Haydock, Tom Eaves’ mount flew the stalls and took the field along with Luna A Inbhir Nis, but when that one dropped away it was Kevin Ryan’s speedster (11-2) who was left alone in front. Ten Pounds, who was slightly slowly away, made eyecatching late headway for a half-length second, but the likes of Celandine, Starlust and Rogue Lightning never looked like getting involved. Eaves said: “Initially I was gutted when the race was called off, so wherever they were going to put it I was delighted. But he definitely seems to like it here and he has come on for his first run of the season. “He is a bit lazy for a sprinter. Not in a bad way but in that he sort of switches off and he would happily just bob around. But when you wake him up and let him know where the race is he is as honest as the day is long. “It is great to have it here and it is great to have him back in winning ways. He has a great season ahead now. He is not in at Royal Ascot but his season will be pretty much mapped out now.” Ryan was at Beverley, where he said: “He’s a cracking horse and has been a great servant. When it was moved to Carlisle I thought ‘this will really suit him’ and it worked out well.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Dramatic incident and stewards enquiry sees jockey banned for 21 days at Limerick | Full Race

Philip Byrnes found himself in hot water with the Limerick stewards, receiving a 21-day ban following an incident at the second last flight of a handicap hurdle. Byrnes had made most of the running on gambled-on favourite Marian Avenue, trained by his father Charles, but, nearing the second last the 11-8 favourite drifted left, hampering runner-up Qaasid which in turn caused Friar Hogan to run out. The favourite was left in command. But Qaasid recovered and stayed on well on the run-in to get within a length and a quarter of Marian Avenue. After a lengthy stewards’ inquiry, Marian Avenue was disqualified and placed last, with the race being awarded to the Shark Hanlon-trained Qaasid - that success turning out to be the first leg of a treble for jockey Danny Mullins. Byrnes was found guilty of dangerous riding and suspended for 21 days. #horseracing #jockeys Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! 10yo Dubai Future springs 28/1 upset in Henry II Stakes | Full Race | Racing TV

Dubai Future served a reminder he is not short of class on his day with a 28-1 surprise in the Star Sports Henry II Stakes at Sandown. The Group Three affair looked to revolve around 8-13 favourite Sweet William, as the Sagaro Stakes scorer sought to reclaim top spot in a race which he won two years ago. Furthur took them along over the two miles, closely attended by Lazy Griff on his first start since finishing third in last year’s Irish Derby, having been runner-up to Lambourn at Epsom. Keeping tabs was David Probert on the Saeed bin Suroor-trained runner, who would make an eyecatching move that saw him lead into the home straight, from where he really kicked inside the two-furlong marker to go clear. Sweet William was bustled along to give chase, but the bird had flown, even though the ultimate margin was just a neck, while Lazy Griff came home with plenty of enthusiasm in third to suggest he too has good things ahead of him. Bin Suroor said of his winner, who landed the Dubai Gold Cup last year and was third in the Gold Cup at Ascot: “He’s a tough horse who always tries hard as we’ve seen in the past. He ran well at Ascot in the Gold Cup last year and improved as the season went on. “Tonight I talked to David and said to him this is a two-mile race and keep him nice and sweet and happy in the race, especially with the cheekpieces on to make him focus. “The horse is doing well and the plan now is to go back to Royal Ascot for the Gold Cup. When you have the right horses who try hard and work well in the morning then you always have the chance to run in the big races.” A place in front of Dubai Future at Ascot was John and Thady Gosden’s Sweet William, who will return for a third crack at the showpiece event, having narrowly failed to build on his winning return. Gosden senior: “He ran a super race giving 5lb and they didn’t go any pace. He picked up well and just ran out of racetrack, another half a stride and he wins. “I’m happy for my old friend Saeed bin Suroor with his old veteran there and for our lad, as a trial for the Gold Cup it was perfect. “Robert (Havlin) was hands and heels with him and we didn’t want him knocked about today and he’s run a lovely race. The Gold Cup in three weeks is what we’re all aiming for. “I’m delighted with his run there and his next run will be over two and a half miles when this was two miles and he just needed another half stride.” It is still to be determined if Sweet William will be joined in the Gold Cup by stablemate and defending champion Trawlerman, who in fact claimed this contest 12 months ago but has yet to be seen this term. Gosden added: “We are seeing if we can get Trawlerman there and he’s going around in shades right now and doing great. We’ll see in his work what he can do. “I don’t want to put a percentage on it, but when I get within two weeks of the race I will know more then.” #horseracing Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Royal Ascot next for unbeaten Where Love Lives | Full Race | Racing TV

Where Love Lives took his unbeaten record to two with a tremendously brave performance in the Star Sports National Stakes at Sandown. Right up with the pace set by 50-1 outsider Bill The Bull, the 7-2 chance had just about mastered Adam Kirby’s runner when Princesse d’Orange on one side and the well-fancied Adaay Of Scarlett on the other put down strong challenges. The Kevin Ryan-trained colt was not for passing, however, and held on to score by half a length from Adaay Of Scarlett in the hands of Kevin Stott, with Princess d’Orange a further neck in arrears, the same distance ahead of the gallant Bill The Bull. The winner was made a 20-1 shot for the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and Stott believes five furlongs could prove the ideal distance to remain at for the youngster’s outing at the summer showpiece. Stott said: “It just took him a bit time to get there and on this track with the road a furlong out it can find them out. I had to get him balanced and then he took a bump, so I had to get him balanced again, but he’s tough. “He’s got bags of speed, but mainly he’s tough and genuine. He’s a bit of a boy but that’s him and I got him down to the start nice and relaxed. He jumped a bit left but he was quick into stride and I really like how he put his head down in the last furlong.” He added: “I can’t see why you wouldn’t go to Royal Ascot, he’s won his maiden nicely and then gone and won this nicely. I think he’s still learning, he’s a big horse and Ascot will probably suit him. “I think five furlongs at Ascot would suit, but I think he will probably get six in time. For now though, he has bags of speed and I think he will take another step forward from this. “He has learned a lot from this mentally and I can’t see any reason not to go to Ascot with him now.” #horseracing Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits!
