After 16-1, 9-1, 7-1 and 2-1 in the past week, Our pundit and resident website tipster Dave Nevison shares his three fancies for Friday’s action on day four of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Enjoy our coverage from 11am live on Racing TV.
There are plenty of familiar names in this field but Temporize - with a new trainer, new jockey and at a new trip - might have more potential upside than those we know.
Syd Hosie has only had the four-year-old for less than a month, having bought him out of the Charlie Johnston yard, and this will be a third outing for Temporize for his new stable already. He certainly does not seem to be showing any ill effects from being campaigned aggressively - quite the contrary in fact - and he ran possibly his best-ever race last time when runner-up at Ascot on good to soft ground.
It could be that the extreme distance of this Goodwood Handicap suits him well given he was putting in good work at the finish at that stiffer course last week, while his dam stayed two miles and has already produced a two-mile winner.
Luke Morris can ride at lower than this weight of 8st 5lb, but all the same the jockey is not often seen riding this light these days and in what looks an interesting booking.
Our top panel provide hints and tips for the week ahead
He was given a break after disappointing on his penultimate start but, provided this race doesn’t come too quick, he could outrun his likely price.
Tacarib Bay won a race at Haydock off this mark last season and I am quite glad he was not on the same side as my tip Baradar in the big handicap at Ascot last weekend as he won the race on his side quite comfortably. This four-year-old has been highly tried in his day and ran in the 2000 Guineas, but these big handicaps are where he should make his money.
He has run very well on soft ground in the past so conditions will not be an issue, and certainly his regular rider couldn’t be in better form at present. Trainer Richard Hannon has already struck at this year’s festival, too.
James Fanshawe’s three-year-old has already proved himself to be a tough battler who acts on heavy going and he might be very well suited to the demands of a competitive Goodwood handicap, especially under these conditions.
He beat George Boughey’s Tempered Soul in a protracted battle on his reappearance on heavy ground at Nottingham and that horse went on to win next time and subsequently finished fifth in a hot Ascot handicap off a mark of 90. Maso Bastie runs off 87 here after running third in a slowly-run race at Newcastle and hopefully he will get a pace to run at here and be shown to best advantage.
