George Scott reveals American dream for James Garfield

The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf could be on the agenda for James Garfield after his narrow defeat in the Acomb Stakes at York on Wednesday.

The son of Exceed And Excel is likely to have one more run before heading to Del Mar in California for the mile contest on November 3.

"He's come out of the race really well," said trainer George Scott. I think he'll take in another race before a possible tilt at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, that's the plan.

"He could first go back to six (furlongs) for the Mill Reef or the Middle Park. We'll also be considering the Somerville Tattersall over seven furlongs.

"Frankie (Dettori) has ridden the winner of the Juvenile Turf three times and is very much of the opinion that it would be a suitable race for him.

"Obviously the mile would be the only slight question mark given he's shown so much speed, but the fast ground and the tight track won't be a problem at all to him."

Scott felt the torrential rain that hit the Knavesmire was the difference between victory and defeat as James Garfield was caught in the last stride by Wells Farhh Go in the seven-furlong Group Three.

The Newmarket handler said: "He ran a great race. They pulled well clear of the third. He's been beaten by probably a very good horse as well. He lost nothing in defeat, though it was disappointing at the time.

"I think the rain cost us the race at York. He wants fast ground, though he handled the soft ground fine. He's just a very efficient little horse. He'd go on any ground."
