1.00 Haydock: Long Draw
Tipster: Harry Allwood.
Best odds: 5-1.
This six-year-old
last time out where he returned with a victory following a 111-day break, and while a 6lb rise demands more, there are reasons to believe he will defy a career-high rating of 134 here.
Olly Murphy's gelding was quietly fancied for the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, with the form of his win at Cheltenham in December working out well, but missed the cut for that race by one. The same happened at Aintree, too, so his absence wasn't by design, and he stayed on powerfully on his belated return plus was well on top at the finish.
He is entitled to improve for that, despite the fact he has gone well fresh in the past, and he appeared to gain a second wind after losing his position ahead of the third last. That looks a strong piece of form, and Long Draw was well on top at the finish despite doing plenty wrong during the race.
The selection also remains unexposed over this trip and Olly Murphy is in red-hot form, with 10 winner from 17 runners (59 per cent strike-rate) in the past fortnight, at the time of writing.
I doubt Long Draw has finished improving yet, and the likelihood of a decent pace should suit, as will the ground, so there are enough positives to suggest he is the one to side with.
1.35 Haydock: Tapley
Tipster: Dave Nevison.
Best odds: 14-1.
Tapley is 4lb lower than when runner-up in this race last season, and with champion jockey Sean Bowen taking over from a 7lb claimer, he can hopefully go one better this time.
The eight-year-old won a handicap on his seasonal reappearance this term, but has had a disappointing season since that.
The positive is that he dropped in the weights and his run last time, when fifth at Hereford, suggested he is getting ready to score again.
It may be significant that he was well backed again last time out, so had clearly been going well at home, and I suspect he will be strong in the market again with the jockey switch.
2.30 Nottingham: Nad Alshiba Green
Tipster: Martin Dixon.
Best odds: 3-1.
A 1lb rise for Nad Alshiba Green's comeback run, when second at Thirsk, should prove lenient because if she'd got a clear passage there, I think she'd quite possibly have won, and I expect her to rate a good bit higher than her current rating of 80 in her three-year-old season.
She was progressive last year, if not quite the finished article mentally, but she's progressed well physically over the winter, and I'm confident this race will set up perfectly for her given she's drawn next door to the free-going, front-runner Naana's Diamond to give her the ideal tow into the race.
She's my nap of the day on Saturday.
4.15 Nottingham: Haymaker
Tipster: Alex Scott.
Best odds: 5-1.
Alex Scott: Haymaker To Land Knockout Blow
