Five horses to follow at Newmarket on Thursday

1.50 Newmarket: Lady Roxby
Tipster: RaceiQ nap of the day (Andy Stephens).
Best odds: 4-1.
Lady Roxby was beaten a neck in this £60,000 fillies’ handicap last year and, 2lb lower in the ratings, can go one better.
She hinted her turn was close when chasing home all-the-way winner Space Bear in a fast-run race at Yarmouth last time.
Crucially, she was 0.47sec slower than the winner through the first furlong and, despite gradually eroding that deficit, ended up 0.15sec adrift.
2.25 Newmarket: Black Velvet Boy
Tipster: Graham Clark.
Best odds: 8-1.
Black Velvet Boy saw his hat-trick bid come unstuck on slower ground at Thirsk last time out, but he is fancied to regain the winning thread.
The switch back to a slicker surface is a major plus, given his wins at Windsor and Beverley were achieved on faster conditions.
Although he is slightly more exposed than some he still looks to have more to offer, while the booking of Oisin Murphy is an eye-catching one with the five-time British champion Flat jockey three from eight in his previous rides for John and Sean Quinn.
3.00 Newmarket: Mezzo Forte
Tipster: Alex Scott.
Best odds: 9-2.
William Haggas’s well-bred colt was a promising fifth on debut at York, but as is typical for a Somerville Lodge juvenile, he learnt plenty from that effort and improved to win second time out when upped to seven furlongs.
He was slowly into stride on debut at York but broke smartly and made all at the same track three weeks ago, and he powered clear to win impressively by two and a half lengths.
The booking of Ryan Moore looks an obvious positive here, with further improvement likely, plus the form of his latest win has since been boosted. The ground should hopefully be no problem.

3.35 Newmarket: Gregory
Tipster: Andy Stephens.
Best odds: 8-11.
Gregory returned from 476 days off with a game success at York in June, winning in a time almost 2sec quicker than the RaceiQ Par.
They went slow early on that day but he then reeled off five successive fast furlongs and his very fast final furlong of 12.19sec sealed matters. The pair who chased him home have franked the form.
James Doyle’s Actual versus Expected on the Rowley Mile course is an excellent 1.64.
4.10 Newmarket: King Of Berkshire
Tipster: Dave Nevison.
Best odds: 9-4.
King Of Berkshire ran really well when second in a strong 0-95 handicap on his penultimate start but definitely benefitted from a drop down to today’s 0-85 grade when winning at Windsor last time out.
That was the third win of the season for this generally progressive colt and he could well make it four wins this afternoon. Oisin Murphy hasn’t yet won on him, but his presence in the saddle is never a negative.
