12.31: Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (Group 1) - 2yo, 1m

This looks a fairly open renewal of the Prix Marcel Boussac, with Green Empress setting the standard after finishing runner-up behind Sun Goddess in the Moyglare and a few potential improvers stepping up in trip, but proven stayer ALLELA can remain unbeaten for the home team.
Christophe Ferland’s Night Of Thunder filly was an impressive winner at Deauville on debut in August, stretching clear to win by four lengths, and the third-placed horse has subsequently landed a maiden by a similar margin.
She then contested a stronger conditions race at Chantilly last month on better ground and ran with enormous credit. Maxime Guyon was caught in a pocket on the rail with nowhere to go a furlong and a half out, but once the gap opened up, she quickend up well to win cosily by half a length.
Granted a clear run, she would almost certainly have won by much more and it speaks volumes that her powerful connections have supplemented her for this race.
Fellow Wertheimer and Frere homebred Data also had traffic problems last time and warrants respect, but Queen Of The Day chased her home in the seven-furlong Prix Six Perfections when last seen in August.
A half-sister to a 1m2f Group One winner, Francis-Henri Graffard’s filly can improve for this step up in trip and, at 12-1 at the time of writing, looks a big price to reverse that form from stall one. She is worthy of each-way consideration.
Selection: Allela. NB: Queen Of The Day (recommended each-way).

1.09 Longchamp: Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Group 1), 2yo, - 7f

An intriguing renewal of the race, with an unbeaten French colt in Avec Toi, a recent Group One winner from Ireland in FOLSOM BLUES, and a filly, Amusingly, who has been sent to take on the colts by Francis-Henri Graffard rather than run against her own sex in the Prix Marcel Boussac.
There are seven other colts to worry about, too, but the feeling is that this will go to Ireland for a third successive years and as the top-rated Folsom Blues sets a high standard.
This is his toughest task to date and his wide draw tempers enthusiasm slightly, but it is not a huge field and his runaway six-length win in the National Stakes over this trip at the Curragh last month was highly impressive. He had previously got within a length and a quarter of the outstanding Sun Goddess in the Phoenix Stakes.
Christopher Head’s Avec Toi has won all four starts to date, all over seven furlongs, and he is regarded by his trainer as the best horse he has ever trained. If that assessment is true, then he should be winning this, and he oozed class in his first three starts looking like a potential superstar, but he is yet to race beyond Group 3 level and only won narrowly last time on the fastest ground he has encountered to date.
Selection: Folsom Blues. NB: Avec Toi.

3.05 Longchamp: Qatar Pix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Group 1), 3yo+, 1m4f

History is against DARYZ in this year’s autumn showpiece as he bids to become the first colt since Alleged 48 years ago to retain his Arc crown. However, there are several factors in his favour.
Although conditions are faster than 12 months ago, he arguably performs even better on good ground, he has a favourable draw in stall five, has recorded eight wins from nine starts on home soil,  seven wins from eight starts at Longchamp, and is three from three in domestic Group One races.
An emphatic winner on rattling fast ground on his seasonl reappearance in the Prix Ganay, he then won by the same margin of three and a half lengths in the Prix Aga Khan IV (Prix d’Ispahan).
Though he was beaten by Ombudsman and Minnie Hauk in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, that slightly-below par run is happily excused given it came less than four weeks later, and particularly since he disappointed in his only previous run overseas. It is quite possible he doesn’t enjoy travelling and he is certainly a different prospect back at Longchamp. This is a home game for him and everything looks in is favour for a big run.
His three-year-old stablemate Varandir only finished three quarters of a length behind general third favourite Maltese Cross over this course and distance in the Grand Prix de Paris. Though William Haggas’s winner should have won by further, Varandir has since won the Prix Niel back over the Arc course and distance in good style and looks overpriced at 10-1 with a better draw next to the favourite in stall four.
Similarly, Kalpana has a decent-looking draw and should appreciate faster ground than she encountered when scrambling home in the Yorkshire Oaks. She had previously beaten Calandagan in the King George, and a similar effort puts her right in the picture for this in receipt of her fillies’ allowance.
Prediction:  1 DARYZ. 2 VARANDIR. 3 KALPANA.

3.50 Longchamp: Prix de l’Opera Longines (Group 1), 3yo+, 1m2f

Several of the fillies in the Prix de l’Opera have had their limitations exposed at Group One level and, at a best-priced 11-8 at the time of writing, 2024 Arc runner-up AVENTURE appeals to follow-up her impressive Prix Jean et Louis Romanet win over Diamond Necklace and land a third top-level victory.
The obvious danger to the Wertheimer and Frere homebred is Precise, who on the basis of her fifth in the Matron and third in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, looks well ready for this step up in trip and the last five renewal of the race have gone the way of the Classic generation.
However, although she is out of a Galileo mare, the daughter of Starspangledbanner is not a definite stayer and may struggle to match the finishing power of the seasoned mare Aventure, who goes well at Longchamp, having also beaten Saturday’s Prix de Royallieu runner-up Sunly at the track in May.
Patrice Cottier’s three-year-old Pink Panthera is progressing at a vast rate of knots and, although she hasn’t won in her last three starts, has finished second each time, including a short neck behind Diamond Necklace in the Prix de Diane and a three-quarters of a length second behind Friendly Soul (and ahead of Sunly) in the Prix Vermeille last month. She can fill the same position once more.
Selection: Aventure. NB: Pink Panthera.

4.25 Longchamp: Qatar Prix de la Foret (Group 1), 7f, 3yo+

It’s not quite as wide open as the Abbaye earlier on the card, but the Prix de la Foret looks a decent betting heat despite the turnout of just eight runners. The seven-furlong contest is dominated by three-year-olds, with just one four-year-old runner, and the value looks to lie with NIGHTTIME.
The son of Wootton Bassett ran a fine race when fifth in a strong Prix du Moluin last month behind Erdenali, Ten Bob Tony, Gstaad and Opera Ballo, and is of interest here returning to seven furlongs from stall one.
His last win came over this course and distance in June, and he then finished a close-up third behind the re-opposing Thesecretadversary and True Love in what was a slowly run race.
A runner-up effort in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over this course and distance is also on his CV, as well as a three-length defeat in the French 2000 Guineas here where he was disadvantaged from being held-up (nearest at the finish). He also sports blinkers for the first time, which can help him get his head back in front at a more favourable track. His trainer Christopher Head has also won the last two renewals of this race and this colt can hopefully complete a successful day for his owner-breeders.
Selection: Nighttime. NB: Pink Panthera.
