1.50 Ascot: Signcastle City
Signcastle City is perhaps typical of horses who contest these Amateur events as he perfroms consistently well but seems difficult to win with these days.
However, he is currently in a solid vein of form and down to his last winning mark and looks to have plenty going for him here. He is a seven-furlong specialist in a race where many runners seem to be better at longer or shorter trips.
Richard Hannon has interestingly booked Jack Loughnane for the ride which reduces his weight by a further 7lb and, although the rider has yet to win, he has been gaining experience on horses that have gone off at very big prices and done well on occasions.
Ground conditions will be fine and It is not difficult to see Signcastle City running another big race.
4.10 Ascot: Ironwill
Ironwill was winning at six and five furlongs on his final two starts last season and, after wind surgery, he made a very promising reappearance over six furlongs this season when finishing fifth at Newmarket in May.
Since then he has been campaigned over seven furlongs with some degree of success, but he has after not really settled and travelled too freely and it is surprising to me that he hasn’t been dropped back in trip before now.
The Stuart Williams-trained gelding has been consistent and has run pretty much off the same mark all season. He was beaten less than a length when third at Doncaster last time in a race that has already produced winners, and this step down in trip could enable him to do better, especially in a big-field strongly-run race, which looks likely here.
6.45 Newcastle: Cable Beach
Tom Tate’s four-year-old is only a low-grade handicapper but he is pretty consistent and has run well on all four starts this season.
Cable Beach came up against a handicapper in red hot form last time out but ran a good second despite having to be switched late in the race.
He is off the same lowly mark this evening and there don’t seem to be many of his rivals currently in strong form.
