Final Venture nets big win for Paul Midgley in Dubai

North Yorkshire trainer Paul Midgley struck gold in Dubai as Final Venture captured the valuable Jebel Ali Port Handicap at Meydan.Sporting a hood for the first time, the five-year-old, who was last seen finishing fifth in a conditions event at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day, broke well for Pat Dobbs and was straight to the head of the field.Saeed bin Suroor's Steady Pace put down a strong challenge from a furlong and a half out under Christophe Soumillon, but while the pair flashed the post together it was Final Venture who got the nod by a nose.Jamesie ran a fine race for David Marnane in third, with Eddie Lynam's veteran Sole Power travelling well for much of the way before being a little short of room and finishing in seventh, not beaten far.Dobbs said: "I wasn't sure I'd won, but he's got a big long neck and he sticks his neck out."I was a passenger for most of the race, he took me along quicker than I wanted to go but he's very tough and tries hard."When I gave him a squeeze passing the two he picked up again and got rolling, and when you get rolling on this track it's hard to peg them back." Red Galileo, last seen finishing fifth in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot in October 2015, made a winning debut for Bin Suroor in the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal Handicap over a mile and three-quarters.Formerly with Ed Dunlop, he was given a clever ride by Soumillon as he looked likely to be swallowed up but pulled out more to beat Carbon Dating by a neck.Fifth in the 2014 Derby behind Australia, he was having his first run for 467 days."If he keeps going like that I think he can get further," said Soumillon. Richard Mullen rarely leaves a Carnival fixture without a winner and he bagged a treble thanks to Town's History, North America and the evergreen Reynaldothewizard, who struck in the Listed Dubawi Stakes for the third year running, this time as an 11-year-old. Daniel Muscutt registered perhaps the most significant win of his career when bringing Marco Botti's Fanciful Angel with a late run to win the Mina Rashid Handicap.The five-year-old was victorious at the Carnival last year but had been winless since, although he had been running in races like the International at Ascot.He beat Denis Coakley's Hors De Combat, with George Baker's Belgian Bill third to give Britain a clean sweep.Muscutt said: "It's great to keep the ride and I have to thank the owners and Mr Botti."Sometimes he's slowly away and can then get keen which makes it difficult, but the ear plugs make a massive difference.He's done it really nicely, and given how he settled he could maybe go over further." Bin Suroor doubled with the Adrie de Vries-ridden Elhaame in the concluding 10-furlong handicap.
