Our website tipster Dave Nevison marks your card for the brilliant action across Haydock, Goodwood, Catterick and on Saturday, all live on Racing TV.
1.15 Haydock: Great Chieftain
Great Chieftain was so consistent last season winning three handicaps, and won so well last time out that, now he has hit form this season, he looks a pretty obvious candidate to strike again here.
The Paul & Oliver Cole-trained contender is now 20lb higher than when he started his winning run in July last year, but he defeated an in-form rival comfortably at Newmarket this month, so I don’t believe his 6lb higher mark here would have stopped him winning there.
He goes well on fast ground and all four of his wins so far have come over a mile. A victory here would also guarantee him a run in the Royal Hunt Cup, which is clearly his Ascot target.
3.45 Goodwood: Anzac Day
This four-year-old has only had three starts so far, and has obviously had training issues, but he has definitely shown enough to suggest he has improvement in him, if Andrew Balding can keep him sound.
Anzac Day won his second start, a Newmarket maiden by over four lengths, and returned this season with a good effort at Kempton, even though he was disqualified for his jockey weighing in a couple of pounds light.
He is by Australia out of a Montjeu mare, and his pedigree is all about stamina, so 1m6f looks set to suit him well here.
This looks like a contest that will have a bearing on several big summer targets, and the application of headgear for the first time appears to be a positive.
3.55 Beverley: Light Speed
Light Speed seemed to take a while to settle in at Gemma Tutty's yard, but the former Andrew Balding-trained runner eventually won a race last year, and his form figures after that Chester success do not flatter him, as he suffered traffic problems.
He got no sort of run when fourth at this track, and might have won had he got a break earlier. It was a similar story on his penultimate start, too, so it is possible he should be rated a fair bit higher if things had gone his way.
The market will likely tell us whether Light Speed is ready to go for his seasonal reappearance, but he has a good draw with pace on his inside, so he could go well here if the lack of a recent run does not take a toll.
Whatever happens on Saturday, I will be watching him closely for a Northern handicap in the near future.
5.13 Catterick: Ancient Times
Ancient Times has started this season in really good form, winning at Doncaster on his reappearance and following up with an excellent second at
last time out.
Both of those efforts were over five furlongs, and he has been campaigned predominantly over that trip in recent seasons.
However, he has won a couple of handicaps over six furlongs, and has been keeping on well at the end of his races this season.
The trip may actually suit him, especially at a sharp track such as Catterick. The Harry Eustace team have generally been in good form this Spring, which is another positive, and Ancient Times looks the obvious one here.
