Some of the best apprentices of this season contest the two divisions of this handicap and several are certainly stars of the future.
Daragh Bourke is one of them and can land this for Michael Herrington who has had a terrific turf season largely with moderate grade handicaps.
Feel The Need had been largely out of form in the spring and summer, but improved at this track in a mile handicap to be beaten just half a length into second.
He subsequently won at Southwell and last time out ran another good second over this trip here. There aren’t many in this field who arrive here at the top of their form but Feel The Need is definitely a contender.
Jamie Snowden is probably the trainer currently in the best form in the country with five winners from his last ten runners at the time of writing, and only one of those runners not making the frame.
Our Guide contributed two wins in minor events in the summer but has improved since and ran really well when third in the Tote Gold Trophy ay Chepstow which has proven to be one of the strongest handicaps of the season so far with three next time out winners.
The handicapper has raised the five-year-old just one pound but his improvement over hurdles so far has been pretty linear and at a much steeper incline than a pound at a time. It is very possible that he could well improve significantly here as he looks like he will be very well suited by this step up to three miles. He was staying on very well over two and a half miles last time and the downhill finish at Chepstow would not have been ideal.
If we couple the positives for Our Guide an improving young stayer against pretty much all of his rivals here. Age, distance, freshness or otherwise and the relatively fast ground all seem to be against this field to a greater or lesser effect. He looks a strong bet to win this.

Real Dream ended last season a mark of 103 and, after being on the go since January this season, he lands in this traditional end of season event off a mark of 90 which is 1lb lower than he won off at the end of his very successful 2025 season.
He obviously hasn’t cut it in the main contesting graded events and top end handicaps, but there have been points this season where it has looked as though there is still something there if things were to go right for him.
He ran very well in the Autumn Cup at Newbury on his penultimate start (under today’s jockey), but last time found a step up to two miles on the all-weather too far. However, he is 4lb lower than the Newbury run here.
I fancy him to be very well suited by a very strongly run 12-furlong handicap at Doncaster where he broke his maiden over this distance. His latest win came on soft ground at Ascot and, though his odds reflect plenty of below form efforts, there is no doubt the form is there if he is in the mood to show it.
In his short career as a trainer so far, Nick Scholfield has already shown himself very capable of improving horses from other yards, including the big ones, and has a very interesting stable debutante here.
Insurrection’s form and attitude was in marked decline for Paul Nicholls last season looking most unwilling on his last two starts, but a move to a new stable can sometimes be transformational and I think he is worth a bet at big odds.
It is interesting the Insurrection, who was a useful graded class performer as a novice hurdler, made his chasing debut in a Grade 2 novice at Chepstow where he jumped well and beat Boombawn a short head for second place, behind a horse rated 154 nowadays.
Boombawn will go off favourite here despite being 8lb worse off and he too has been disappointing recently. Insurrection did win a handicap for Nicholls and is only 1lb higher than then, so if he has settled in well at his new yard and is in positive form, he can clearly go well.

If anybody fancies a Xmas lunch with a racing theme, please get in touch.
I have been a frustrated MasterChef contestant for years and started doing these Racing Lunches after my legs packed in and I can’t really go racing too often. They have gone down very well so far so this year so I have decided to host “A Bloody Good (Xmas) Dinners.”
I have been around long enough to have quite a few stories to tell and would to host a few of you for festive drinks, great food and enjoyable chat for a few afternoon’s in December. If you, your syndicate or owners group are interested in a slightly different Xmas celebration in central London please email me at [email protected]
