Dave Nevison: Here's hoping Johnny can come good at Haydock

Dave Nevison struck with a 16-1 winner last week in his tipping column and bids to follow it up with an 8-1 chance in the replacement Ayr Gold Cup at Haydock.

It is not the Ayr Gold Cup - that’s for sure, but Ayr’s loss is Haydock’s gain and in the renamed 32Red Gold Cup I am going to stick with Johnny Barnes, who was going to be my selection for the big race last weekend.

John Gosden’s horse is drawn 17, so might not be near the main pace setters who are middle to low but in these conditions I am thinking they will come down the stands’ side.

Johnny Barnes is a hold-up sprinter so I am hopeful Robert Tart will get behind the right ones and end up in front at the line!

Johnny Barnes went into lots of Racing UK trackers with a good run at Ascot in July and then did nothing wrong at all when winning at Goodwood last time.

Ground will not be any issue and although he is not 100% straightforward at the start he looks a real progressive type. There will probably be extra place offers for this race and Skybet’s first eight places in the Cambridgeshire is pretty extraordinary so my usual rules apply - take the best place terms you can.

Tom Eaves is the man for me at Chester and can top and tail the card. Ayutthaya is a maiden, but was taking on far too much when second at York to Elarqam, who won so well at Newmarket this week. He has absolutely nothing in that league on Saturday and looks a good thing.

In the 5.55 I am deserting last weeks 10-length winner Brandon Castle, who is in a much more competitive race than at Catterick and is also 10lb higher.

Kajaki has a really good record at Chester and won in good style last time out.

That win was over course and distance, and on heavy ground, so all he has to do for me is repeat that effort to win.

It is an absolutely fabulous card at Newmarket but I will be watching from the studio this afternoon. I am not getting involved but for what is worth I do think Chelsea Lad might run well in the Cambridgeshire now people have forgotten about him. He looks a big price at 16-1.

Dave Nevison's Saturday tips: (Prices correct at 6pm)

2.30 Chester: Ayutthaya at Evens

3.15 Haydock: Johnny Barnes at 8-1

5.55 Haydock: Kajaki at 100-30
