Top tipster Dave Nevison bids to get off to a flying start with his three selections for day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Enjoy all the action live on Racing TV!
1.20 Goodwood: Ancient Rome
Ancient Rome needs to be forgiven a poor run in the John Smith's Cup at York last time out, but if a line is put through that effort, he can certainly be considered here.
The Charlie Hill-trained six-year-old won this race in 2023 on his first start for the yard after moving over from France, and followed up that win in a Group Three contest plus has largely been campaigned at a high level without further success since, but has run well on occasions.
His two efforts in handicaps prior to his latest blip suggested he was definitely able to win off this sort of mark, and he is 5lb below the rating he scored off two years ago.
He could definitely get this race run to suit, with Jamie Spencer perhaps the ideal jockey to deliver him off a fast pace.
3.45 Goodwood: Reigning Profit
Ruth Carr is having a terrific season and didn’t have a runner finish out of the frame over the weekend, so I am pretty sure
Reigning Profit is set to go well here.
He ran a terrific race at Ascot last time in a similarly big-field dash, battling back after being headed but just getting run out of things by an in-form rival.
The six-year-old has been a steady improver throughout his career and is definitely capable of handling this grade, so as long as he can avoid a tendency to miss the break here, he should go close at chunky odds.
5.30 Goodwood: Dubai Treasure
Oisin Murphy and Saeed bin Suroor teamed up for Group One success in Germany at the weekend, and they might be able to extend their good run in this competitive fillies' handicap. I believe it might be a good move dropping
Dubai Treasure back to six furlongs, despite her winning and running very well on her past two outings over seven furlongs.
She travelled really strongly in a hot handicap at York last time, on the outside of the field, and may well have hit the front too soon, so weakened into fourth place close home.
The selection races off the same rating here and looks the class act in the field off top weight. With this course and distance generally favouring horses that race up with the pace, she looks a solid option.
