2.40 Goodwood: Mr Hampstead
Amo Racing and Roger Varian, not unexpectedly given his pedigree, had very high hopes of Mr Hampstead last season, running him as a maiden in both the Derby and at Royal Ascot, but he wasn’t anywhere near up to that level.
His new trainer Raphael Freire has calmed that ambition and ran him in a handicap over this course and distance last time and he bolted up by five and a half lengths. The step up to two miles obviously suited him very well and this looks another good opportunity for him to follow up.
The 7lb weight rise is fully justified and this competitive handicap could be a real stepping stone to possible targets at Ascot or Newcastle that are coming up in June.
5.30 Goodwood: Kiss And Run
Kiss and Run was a consistent filly in modest sprint handicaps last season and looks to have returned in decent form judged on her recent reappearance effort when third at Bath.
The four-year-old has a good record at Goodwood and won a 0-80 handicap here last summer. This race is of a higher grade but she has been dropped a pound in the weights and helped even further with the booking of crack 7lb claimer Maeson Patel for the ride.
This will be a real dash but should suit Kiss And Run ideally and she could be a lively outsider here.
7.47 Pontefract: Made All
Made All had his first run for one of my favourite yards last time and showed improved form having been upped in trip and with a change of headgear.
He did very well to come from the back in a slowly run race at Catterick and it is possible that the much stiffer Pontefract might well suit him even better.
That win was in a 0-55 grade handicap and this one is slightly higher at 0-60 but otherwise Sam England has got Made All in an exactly similar situation with the same jockey, headgear, going and distance and I believe the four-year-old should defy the penalty and win again.
