Dave Nevison's 20-1 tip for the Scottish Grand National

Western Diego won his only point-to-point race in good style and he was expected earlier to make a top grade novice hurdler but didn’t reach the higher echelons. 

Aspirations for him over fences look to have been set at a much lower level, at least initially. He is running in his first handicap here and off a mark of 134 and he can get Willie Mullins’ day off to a flyer. 

The eight-year-old arrives her having run in three novice chases and he stayed on nicely last time, rallying after making the running. The headgear which he doesn’t seem to need is left off again here and he looks to have too much potential over fences for the exposed pair of Dan Skelton runners. 

Lucinda Russell’s promising young stayer might be one for the locals in this decent handicap chase. 

His latest race at Cheltenham can have a line put through it as he lost all chance at the start, but he has previously run good races over this course and distance, including when winning in good style three starts ago. 

Whistle Stop Tour is only 6lb higher and could actually be pretty well handicapped, especially against other novices. He has raced on softer ground this season but won on good ground over hurdles at this course last season. 

Paul Nicholls has a live chance to play a part in the Mullins/Skelton title duel in this significant handicap hurdle. 

Kabral Du Mathan has been running well all season and looks to have been saved for this. Last time out he was a very good second to the very progressive (when he jumps round) Secret Squirrel. The five-year-old seems to be well suited by a big field, competitive event and this race is usually won by horses towards the front of the market, so Kabral Du Mathan has strong claims under Harry Cobden. 

It would be a massive feather in the cap of rookie trainer Faye Bramley if she could beat the might of the Mullins battalion by scooping the Scottish National with just her sixth runner! 

It is certainly not impossible, provided she has got on quickly with this gelding, who is a general 20-1 chance.

Walking On Air is described as very much a chaser by Timeform and certainly looked as if he would make the grade when he made his debut over fences last season. 

He was giving 12lb to Henry’s Friend on that occasion and is 2st better off with that horse here. Their respective form has gone in opposite directions but there has been definite promise in Waliking On Air’s past two starts. 

And with veteran Richie Mcclernon, who excels in staying chases, taking over from an amateur, I think he is worth risking.
