Conflated will head for the Ryanair Chase (Pic: Focusonracing)
Gigginstown House Stud supremo Michael O’Leary is in favour of running
Conflated in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, instead of bidding for Boodles Gold Cup glory.
The Gordon Elliott-trained eight-year-old proved he has what it takes to make his mark at the highest level when landing the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown earlier this month.
But with Elliott responsible for another leading Gold Cup contender in Savills Chase winner Galvin, O’Leary would prefer his charge to run in a race he sponsors and won for the first time with Balko Des Flos in 2018.
“I don’t think Conflated will win the Gold Cup, because if Galvin runs in the Gold Cup for Gordon, I think we’ll switch Conflated to the Ryanair,” he told Sky Sports Racing.
“I don’t think Conflated would beat Galvin and I think it would make sense from Gordon’s point of view to divide the two horses.
“We’ll go and take on Willie (Mullins) in the Ryanair.”
O’Leary also confirmed his dual
Grand National hero
Tiger Roll will be retired after bidding for a sixth Festival win in the Glenfarclas Chase, having already ruled out going for a third National triumph.
Connections have long been unhappy with his handicap mark in Britain, and O’Leary issued a statement just hours after the unveiling of the National weights on February 15 in which he described his rating of 161 as “absurd”.
Asked what he would have been happy to run off, O’Leary said: “If he (British Horseracing Authority handicapper Martin Greenwood) rated him at around 150 and gave him a 5lb premium for his past Aintree performance, he’d be 155, which is what the Irish handicapper rated him this time last year. We’d have run him at that and it would at least have given him a fair chance.
“You cannot defy age. He will not be in the Grand National by the time he runs in the cross country – he’s coming out at the next forfeit stage. I have no intention of asking the horse, who is like a fifth child to me, to carry 11st 8lb or 11st 10lb around Aintree at his age.
“Thankfully, the
Tiger Roll controversy will never happen again because he will be retired after the cross-country race in Cheltenham this year.”

Gethin teed up a potential step up to Group One company with a stylish return to action in the Virgin Bet Daily Price Boosts Magnolia Stakes at Kempton.
Viewed by trainer Owen Burrows as a potential Derby contender this time last year, a setback ruled him out of the Classic and he did not return until September.
With another winter on his back he has developed into a serious specimen and the Ghaiyyath colt had little trouble in landing this Listed prize under Callum Rodriguez, beating Devil’s Advocate by three and a quarter lengths as the 7-4 favourite.
“He’s still a work in progress, Callum said he gave him a hard enough time today and he gave me a hard enough time putting the saddle on,” Burrows told Racing TV.
“That’s him, there’s no nastiness, he’s quite boisterous and with racing he will grow up.
“I’ve had a great run with him and we’ve had a nice uninterrupted prep but when we weighed him yesterday there’s still a little bit to work on.
“Before the race I’d have thought we’d have been going up in trip but looking at that and Callum said he felt really comfortable there (10 furlongs) so we might not be in such a rush.”
Considering plans for Gethin’s next outing, the trainer added: “He’s in the Prix Ganay but that looks as strong a Ganay as there has been for years, so we’ll have a chat with the owners and make a plan.
“I’ve never made any secret of the fact I think the world of him so I’d like to think we’ll be going into Group Ones at some stage, whether it’s his next run, we’ll see.”
Burrows also had mixed news regarding his two classy fillies from last year, Touleen and Calendar Girl.
He said: “Touleen is in real good form and she may run in a (Guineas) trial, we’ll look at Newbury (Fred Darling Stakes).
“Unfortunately Calendar Girl I’m just not happy with, she’s scoping dirty and I can’t seem to get her clean so she’ll just be turned out all April and we’ll start again in May – she won’t be making any Guineas.”

Trainer Emmet Mullins explains how he masterminded a brilliant success for Soldier In Milan in the BOYLE Sports Irish Grand National. The seven-year-old had not even run under Rules this time last year!

Soldier In Milan belied his inexperience with a stunning victory in the Boyle Sports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse.
The Emmet Mullins-trained seven-year-old had run just five times under rules heading into the Easter Monday feature, a sequence incorporating a Punchestown Festival bumper success last spring followed by four runs over fences this season.
While he was beaten into fourth as a hot favourite for a Grade Three novice chase at Thurles last month, confidence was clearly high ahead of this acid test as he was a well supported 6-1 favourite as the tapes went up and he raced up with the pace throughout under Donagh Meyler.
After taking over the lead from British raider Monbeg Genius leaving the back straight for the final time, Soldier In Milan tanked his way to the third fence from home and the heavy fall of his nearest pursuer and chief market rival Kiss Will left him clear.
Showurappreciation and The Enabler did their best to bridge the gap, but neither were able to lay a glove on the hugely impressive winner, who passed the post with 16 lengths in hand, seeing him earn a quote of 33-1 for next year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup with Paddy Power.
“It hasn’t really hit home yet. I was pinching myself jumping the last with a lap to go, he was jumping and travelling and everything was going very smoothly,” said Mullins.
“The biggest worry was bypassing the fourth last and hitting the front.
“I had warned Donagh that if everything is going right to wait as long as he can. He executed everything brilliantly, it was a brilliant ride.
“Leaving out a hurdle campaign was a risk, I suppose. We always hoped he had the class to overcome the inexperience.
“He was smart out the gate and into gear. Fingers crossed we think he could be a classy individual.”
He went on: “He was fit and well. Funnily enough, I know he went off favourite, but I told Paul ‘everything is good, he’s happy, he’s healthy, he’s fit but I’ve seen him in better order’.
“I was only 95 per cent. I was 100 per cent happy last year going for the bumper in Punchestown and that proved to be very strong form, beating King Rasko Grey.
“Fingers crossed we can get him back 100 percent again some other day!
“A well-backed favourite winning an Irish National is something special and he was greatly received here today. It’s an honour and a privilege.
“It’s been the plan, there’s no hiding that fact, since the start of the season when we decided we were going over fences.
“We decided to keep low mileage and get the four runs he needed to qualify. It was well executed, I suppose. There are lots of plans that go awry but that was magic.
“You are hoping though the horse has got the mentality for it, the courage for that cavalry charge down to the first and to come out of it with a good position.
“We thought we had a classy individual and thankfully he’s proved it.”
Regarding a possible Gold Cup campaign Mullins added:- “He’s a classy individual but this has been a route in the past to the Aintree Grand National as well.
“We won’t nail our colours to the mast just yet anyway.”

Proactif bounced back from Cheltenham Festival disappointment with a battling success in the O’Driscoll’s Irish Whiskey Juvenile Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Impressive over the course and distance on his Irish debut, the Willie Mullins-trained four-year-old finished down the field as the 7-2 favourite for last month’s Triumph Hurdle, but he was a heavily supported 5-4 shot to reward those who kept the faith back on home soil.
Proactif took over the lead from stablemate Kai Lung three flights from home and while he was strongly pressed by another Closutton inmate in Macho Man after the last, he dug deep for Mark Walsh to prevail by a neck, with Majolique rounding off a Mullins one-two-three.
“It was a tough performance. Mark said he let himself down today on the ground, there was a nice dig in it. He didn’t let himself down at all the last day,” Mullins said of the winner.
“It’s nice to have one like him. The first three will all make their name, I think, in the next few years.
“Proactif is a fine big, horse that can go jumping fences, the same with the second horse. I could see Majolique staying over hurdles. Things didn’t go right for her but she’s a fair mare too.”
When asked if the winner could turn out again at Punchestown, the champion trainer added: “I’d imagine so, he’ll have a good long rest for the summer so we’ll keep him working now until Punchestown.
“There is plenty of time between now and Punchestown, it will be the last race of the season so if they recover well from here they’ll go there.”

A fantastic finish on Irish Grand National day at Fairyhouse as Proactif - sent off favourite for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham on his previous run - downs fellow Festival also-ran Macho Man in a 1-2 for trainer Willie Mullins.

Fleur In The Park provided his trainer Andrew Slattery and jockey Cian Quirke with a first Grade One success in an eventful renewal of the 2026 WillowWarm Gold Cup at Fairyhouse.
Having been beaten on each of his previous attempts at Graded company over hurdles and fences, the seven-year-old was a widely unconsidered 22-1 chance for what looked a competitive affair featuring three Willie Mullins-trained runners, two for Gordon Elliott and a British Grade One winner in Fergal O’Brien’s Sixmilebridge.
It was the latter who took the field along for much of the two-and-a-half-mile journey, but he had several challengers rounding the home turn, at which stage all eight runners were still in with a chance of victory.
