There are some nice horses returning to the track on Sunday, most notably last year’s leading staying novice chaser Might Bite who has a few quirks but also a huge engine and I’m looking forward to seeing him in the 2.20 at Sandown.
Might Bite is not much of a betting proposition but in the following handicap hurdle over two miles at 2.55 stablemate Wenyerreadyfreddie does look like one to back on his handicap debut at 100-30.
Steadily progressive in four career starts, including three over hurdles, his form lines look strong and with the way those races have worked out I think he looks to have been allotted a pretty generous opening mark of 129.
He is conceding race fitness to a few of his main rivals but Nicky Henderson has a good record with horses making their return for the season and as such I think he can make a winning start to his campaign.
Evan Williams has done very well with his retuning runners of late and I like the look of a couple from his stable at Ffos Las this afternoon.
Billy Bronco has some other promising types to beat in the novices’ chase at 1.30 but is bred to make a useful staying chaser and looks the type to do well over fences this season.
He was picked up by current connections following a debut bumper win for Debra Hamer, and was a fortunate winner of a novice hurdle at Ayr in January.
His previous placed form at Ffos Las behind Constantine Bay and Brio Conti, plus his second at the Welsh track to Ballymalin, reads very well.
Under optimum conditions with a valuable 5lbs claim of Mitch Bastyan easing his burden a little, I think he can make a winning start over fences.
The other horse trained by Williams I’m keen on is Prime Venture in the 3m handicap hurdle at 3.05.
Successful on his seasonal return last year, as well as on his racecourse debut in 2015, he is clearly a horse who can go well fresh and he is likely to be fit following a break.
A bit unfortunate not to win again following last year’s reappearance, he boasts several pieces of strong form behind progressive horses and looks better handicapped than his opponents.
A stoutly-bred horse who usually sees his races out strongly, he is unexposed over staying trips and looks likely to improve for this sort of stamina test. Admittedly he is a short price but the 6-4 available seems fair enough for a horse I fully expect to win.
Neil Mulholland is another trainer with a good record at this time of year with horses making their return from a break.
The wheels have taken a little longer to start turning but the recent wins of Chirico Vallis and Dalaman have shown that his horses coming back now are that bit further forward than the ones that were returning a few weeks back.
Hopefully they have managed to get plenty of work into Johns Luck as, if fit, I thought he had a solid chance in the 3m handicap chase at 2.30.
He won twice last season, including at this track and though he was beaten off just 1lb higher on his three starts following the second of those wins, on each occasion he bumped into well-treated horses, the like of which seem fairly thin on the ground in this race.
