Ayr victor Catching The Moon likely to embark on winter break

Catching The Moon may be finished for the season following her success in the Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr on Saturday.

Richard Fahey knows the family of his filly very well having trained her dam Riches And Rubies, who is a daughter of the Pretty Polly winner Diamondsandrubies.

Her half-sister, Pearls And Rubies, was second in the Cheveley Park for Aidan O’Brien but with that Group One just seven days after Ayr, Fahey is happy to bypass it and feels Catching The Moon may be better off being saved for next season.

Fahey said: “There’s not really a race left for her, so I’d say we’re going to pull the plug for the year.

“There’s the Cheveley Park on Saturday but that would be too soon as she’s only a shell of a filly yet and after that there’s not really another race in the calendar for her.”

Looking ahead to next year, Fahey said: “I trained her dam and she won over a mile and a half, so you if you know what trip she’s going to want, let me know!

“She has plenty of natural speed and a fantastic mind on her. I don’t think she was really in love with the ground the other day but she handled it.

“She ran very well first time and then I had to run her over five at Beverley, but the only reason she ran there was because I had to get another run into her before Ayr and I couldn’t find another one, it wasn’t that I thought she wanted five.

“I’d say next year we will be starting her over seven in a Guineas trial and she won’t carry a penalty for Saturday which is fantastic.

“A winter on her back will really help her. I’ll speak to Richard (Henry, owner) but I’d say she’ll be finished for the year.”
