2.05 York: Copper Knight

Copper Knight is a York specialist having won here 7 times in his career. He returns to the track off a mark of 74, 5lb lower than his latest win that came at Beverley earlier this season.

Not only is his mark slipping, it is doing so because he has had little luck in terms of trip and draw of late. His latest run at Newcastle can be forgiven because he has not run well there in four visits.

He has shown this season that he retains plenty of ability and off his declining mark from the plum draw in stall one, he looks sure to go well in a handicap that is as weak as he has contested for a while.

2.40 York: Florida Dreams

Florida Dreams was a Grade 2 Bumper winner in 2023 and has been successful over hurdles since.

He had no chance to show what he could do over a completely inadequate trip on the flat at Hamilton last time out. But now that he steps up to two miles on the level his handicap mark of 70 could underestimate him.

He has a particularly good record when fresh and given he has not raced since June, he ticks that box as well.

3.15 York: Besieged

Besieged is lightly raced and thoroughly progressive. He routed some inferior rivals in Heavy ground at Salisbury last time out and did so in a fast time that suggests his opening handicap mark of 93 is not harsh.

He hails from the in-form Harry Charlton team and is bred to be better than a handicapper being by Dubawi out of the Falmouth winning mare Sky Lantern.

None of his rivals today boast the potential that he does and he can take another step forward towards Pattern company.

3.50 York: Extremely Zain

Extremely Zain drops to six furlongs today which, given his keen-going nature, looks to be a good move.

He has not quite lived up to his reputation nor the promise of his early season exploits, but William Haggas won this race last year and is happy to keep him in good company and the impression that this horse created when winning the first three races of his career lingers in my mind.

One of those wins came here at York which augurs well for his return today over a trip which may well prove to be his best.
