Two winners here in the
Sunday column last week and hopefully more to come this week with four selections from Goodwood, which you can watch live on Racing TV.
Spanish Star won this race last year and can repeat the trick. He comes here in good from and is only 3lb higher in the weights than 12 months ago. This promises to be a strongly run race which will suit his hold-up style and I expect Tom Marquand to deliver him late and fast. A first win of the season looks on the cards for this consistent gelding.
This does not look to be a strong Novice Stakes and looks ideal for an unexposed newcomer like Alumnus. William Buick has been booked to ride and this well-bred colt has an excellent chance of winning on debut. He is from a strong staying family being a half-brother to the useful Harrovian and his dam is a halfsister to the Group One winner Alborada. This nine-furlong trip on easy ground should be ideal.
This horse has been in fine fettle of late, winning his past three races. His improvement in form has come since blinkers have been applied and there could be more to come despite his mark having risen to 90. All of his last three wins have come under inexperienced riders and I anticipate that there is some improvement to come now that William Buick takes over in the saddle. Saratoga Gold faces a competitive field, but has not stopped improving.
This consistent type can gain his third career success. He ran well here last time out when finishing third in a strong claiming handicap. Substantial, who finished second, went on to win a good handicap at York on Friday. That looks to be solid form in the context of this class 4 handicap. Stately Home is a consistent type and will find this race a lot easier than some of the tasks he has been set. He rates as a strong play.
