Hurdles and fences to turn white to further aid horse welfare

Hurdles and fences to turn white to further aid horse welfare

Hurdles and steeplechase fences in Britain are to be gradually changed in colour from March 14 after research into equine vision undertaken at Exeter University and utilised by the Horse Welfare Board.

The study, which was commissioned by the BHA and funded by the Racing Foundation, used camera equipment across 11 racecourses to establish which colours were most visible to horses when used on the take-off boards, guard rails and the top boards of an obstacle.
These elements have traditionally been orange, but an understanding of horses’ dichromatic vision led researchers to the conclusion that, through equine eyes, the colour orange was not distinct from the green shade of the turf.
Blue, bright yellow and white were all more easily distinguishable to horses and the latter colour was eventually chosen for its resistance to fading.
The theory was tested on 14 horses trained at the National Hunt yard of Richard Phillips, who corroborated the findings of the study and said: “Having been involved in the research undertaken by Exeter University and having used white obstacles for over three years now, I am convinced that changing the colour of jumps will be of immense benefits to the horses, riders and the sport as a whole.”
The transition will begin at Stratford and will take place over 10 months, with point-to-point tracks set to follow suit ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Barry Johnson, chair of the Horse Welfare Board, said: “This important project is an example of how British racing uses advanced scientific and veterinary research to constantly improve racehorse welfare.
“Looking through the eyes of the horse to understand how they perceive their world, and making changes because of this new knowledge, shows how racing is continuously striving to increase the safety of all participants in our sport, both human and equine.”
Former trainer James Given, who is now the director of equine health and welfare for the BHA and a member of the Horse Welfare Board, added: “We are determined to drive constant improvement and to make reasoned, well-researched and evidence-based changes which further reduce risk in the sport on a long-term basis and which help to improve safety factors for our horses.”

James J Braddock chins Pierre Bonnard in Leopardstown Derby Trial | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

James J Braddock got up late to collar Pierre Bonnard on the line in the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown. Stablemate Endorsement led the Aidan O’Brien-trained Pierre Bonnard along at head of the field before Wayne Lordan asked the Camelot colt and Derby hopeful Pierre Bonnard – the 5-6 favourite despite his eclipse in the Ballysax Stakes on his reappearance – to take it up with a furlong to go. Endorsement was not giving up without a fight, but it was Dylan Brown McMonagale and James J Braddock on the outside that proved to be the danger and the Joseph O’Brien-trained 9-1 shot timed his run perfectly to get up on the line and win by a short head. Paddy Power slashed James J Braddock to 25-1 from 100-1 for the Betfred Derby on June 6, although O’Brien will not rush into any plans for his winner, with plenty of options now opening up. “He was tough. He ran a nice race here the first day and we thought he’d come on from the run,” he said. “We were a bit worried about the fast ground because his maiden win last year was on quite soft ground. You’d have to say that he handled it well. “Before today we were thinking he might be a horse for the King Edward in Ascot. That’s the race we were working towards, but I suppose we now have to consider other options as well. “We’ll see how he comes out of it and discuss it with Aziz Kheir (owner). It’s the first horse we’ve had for him, he has a lot of horses in Australia. “This is going to be a horse that will hopefully turn up in top international races through the course of his career. Today was obviously a big step forward. We’ve always thought he’d love going a mile and a half.” When it was put to him that it looks like an open Derby, he added: “It’s probably fair to say that, it looks like a relatively open race. “I thought some of those Chester horses looked pretty good in fairness, but it does look like an open race and I guess this guy is one of the contenders now having won a trial. “If we did want to go there he has earned his spot. I think we’ll just see how the next week goes and discuss it with Aziz, see how he pulls up and make a plan then.” Asked if he’d handle Epsom, he said: “I think so, he’s a good traveller. He travelled very well today and I think he potentially could.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! Catalina Delcarpio returns to winning ways in Amethyst | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Catalina Delcarpio continued Paddy Twomey's fine form as she returned to winning ways in the Listed Porsche In Support Of Breast Cancer Ireland Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown. The four-year-old raced in midfield before going through the gears in the last furlong, taking over and running on well to win by a length and a quarter from Tokenomics. Twomey said: “Billy said he’d like to drop her in and I said ‘do whatever you want’. She has a lot of class. “It was maybe trainer error last year, I stretched her out to a mile and four in the Ribblesdale and I’d say she has too much speed for that. “I said to Billy that we’d start back at a mile. She had a setback after she ran in Ascot so she was just ready to start back when she ran in the Park Express and I thought she’d come forward well from it. “I think she can step up to 10 furlongs no problem, but she has pace for a mile. “Her new connections were keen that we win a Listed race before stepping up the grades. She’s done that today so I think we’ll be allowed to do whatever we want now. “I doubt she’d go for the Lanwades as we have City Of Memphis and One Look as well for that. “I’d imagine a race like the Pretty Polly would be right up her street.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! City Of Memphis continues Twomey's rampant form | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

City Of Memphis made it two from two this season with a straightforward victory in the Group Three Al Shira’aa Racing “Mutamakina” Stakes at Leopardstown. California Dreamer pulled them along at the head of the field in the seven-furlong contest, with the Paddy Twomey-trained City Of Memphis covering her every move. Billy Lee then laid down his challenge at the one pole to take it up in a duel with California Dreamer and Snellen, and the 7-4 favourite’s class shone through as she came home one and a half lengths clear of the fast-finishing Signora. Snellen was a neck further adrift in third. “She’s a very good filly. We haven’t raced her much and I’m hoping we’ll make up for lost time this year,” said Twomey. “She’s in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes on Guineas weekend and I think the mile will be no problem. “She’s a filly that will do very well later in the year, over seven or a mile. I’ll keep her to better tracks.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits!
