Alfie proves a money-spinner for Kerry Lee at Wincanton

Kerry Lee has her sights set on capturing more marathon contests with veteran Alfie Spinner after he rolled back the years to land the Higos Insurance Services Somerset National at Wincanton.Despite having been off the track for 294 days, the 12-year-old defended his 100 per cent record since joining the Byton handler when making all the running in the extended three-and-a-quarter-mile stamina test, under an enterprising ride from Jamie Moore.After the strong-travelling Cyclop took a crashing fall at the fourth-last, 9-1 shot Alfie Spinner was then faced with shaking off the attentions of Abracadabra Sivola down the home straight who, having seemed in trouble at one stage, loomed up as a serious threat.Lee's charge produced bold leaps at the final two fences and held the David Pipe-trained runner at bay by three lengths."That was absolutely fantastic. It was 100 per cent job satisfaction," said Lee."The horse has had his problems. He came to us at the beginning of last season and has only run twice and he is now two from two. "He really enjoyed it as he jumped well and galloped them into submission. Credit to Jamie Moore, as he gave him an absolutely beautiful ride."It really was a 'wow' moment at the second-last. It is just a testament to how much he enjoys racing. He is a horse that loves life.I think he was out of love with racing when he came to us and we have just reignited him. "We will have to see where we go now, but Higos Insurance Services also sponsor the Devon National, so we may take him to Exeter and try to win some more of their prize-money there."We are pretty pleased with him. It has taken us a long time to get him right, but it just shows what patience can do."
