Newmarket Racecourse is made up of two courses - the Rowley Mile Course (named after Old Rowley the favourite racehorse of King Charles II) and the July Course.

The Rowley Mile Course has a 1 mile 2 furlong straight with minor undulations towards 'The Bushes', two furlongs out. The penultimate furlong is downhill and the last is uphill, forming 'The Dip'. Races beyond the distance of 1m 2f start on the 'Cesarewitch' or 'Beacon' course which turns right-handed into the straight.

The Rowley Mile is used for racing in the Spring and Autumn, and hosts the majority of the Group 1 races staged at Newmarket, including the 2000 & 1000 Guineas.
