Wendigo produced a fine round of jumping in the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle
The Jamie Snowden-trained chaser sealed a fine day for the yard when winning the listed Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle.
The trainer had earlier landed the PricedUp Boosted Prices Daily Houghton Mares' Chase with Obsessedwithyou, and had also enjoyed a brace of winners -
including chase debutant Johnny's Jury - down at Worcester.
Sent off an easy-to-back 4-1 chance, the seven-year-old Wendigo had to concede 10 lb to favourite Potters Charm but was able to dictate from the front under Conor O'Farrell who was riding the son of Great Pretender for the first time.
His fine jumping had seen off sole other rival Doyen Quest before the turn for home, but Potters Charm – a winner at Worcester last month – still looked a danger under Sam Twiston-Davies before two out.
However, a big leap at the last sent Wendigo clearer on the lead and he galloped on well to win by two and a quarter lengths.
The winning rider told Racing TV: "He's a very smart horse. He had a lot of things against him, was wrong at the weights, probably wants softer ground and a bit further. But I couldnt fauilt him. Long or short he was brilliant .
"I committed him early enough. I thought he was getting tired before the last but he stuck his head out when he heard the other horse coming.
"Credit to the horse, it was a very very good performance."
As to the future, the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury (November 28th) is likely to be next on the agenda while longer term Wendigo could maybe attempt to follow in the footsteps of Many Clouds, who landed the 2014 Colin Parker before going on to victory at Newbury and in the
Grand National at Aintree the following spring.
O’Farrell commented: “Newbury should be right up his street, and he should be spot on for it now.
“He is an exciting prospect for Aintree in the spring. I am only keeping the saddle warm for Gavin Sheehan (Wendigo’s regular jockey).
“He is a smashing horse with loads of scope, and you couldn’t have asked for more on his first run of the season.
“There are similarities with Many Clouds and Newbury and Aintree are two targets for him. Aintree should hold no fears for him if the ground was right as he can jump long and short.”
Snowden had been at Worcester to watch Albert Bartlett winner Johnny’s Jury make a winning chasing debut and Joyau Allen strike on his first run for the yard and told the Press Association: “It’s been an incredible day. The two winners at Worcester we hoped and thought had every chance but the two at Carlisle were incredible.
“Wendigo had a lot against him today, it was better ground than he’d prefer, only two and a half miles and right-handed so for him to go and do that, especially at the weights, was great.
“Maybe the other two might have disappointed slightly but we can only beat what is in front of us.
“That was a prep run, all being well, for Newbury (Paddy Power cut him to 8-1 from 10s).
“He’s definitely better on softer ground but they’d done a good job watering at Carlisle and thankfully it all worked out.”
Obsessedwithyou beat two highly-rated mares in Apple Away and Paggane.
Snowden said: “She’s beaten two very good mares there, that was a phenomenal performance.
“Her jumping was foot perfect, she was brilliant and it was a joy to watch.
“She’s won lots of races but never got black type so we went looking for a little bit of small black type and came away with big black type. Fair play to her.
“Some mares really take to jumping fences and she’s one of them, you never know where they might end up.”
