Wednesday top tips: Latch on to the Group horse in a handicap at Doncaster

Racing UK presenter Angus McNae had two winners in last week's Wednesday tipping blog and marks your card for Wednsday's action.

A couple of winners last week kept my Wednesday column firing on all cylinders and I am looking to build on the ten winners I’ve selected since this service kicked off in July. I had four tips for you on Wednesday, with two at Doncaster on the opening day of the William Hill St Leger Festival, but unfortunately one was a non-runner.

3.10 Carlisle - Voice of the North:

This colt made a promising debut at Epsom, where he seemed to be unsuited by the track and in the circumstances did well to finish fourth last month.

Once he regained his balance late on in the race he finished well and gave the impression that he would have gone close to winning on a conventional track.

I am sure he will put up a much-improved display at Carlisle.

The emphasis will very much be on stamina over a trip just short of a mile on soft ground at this track and that looks sure to suit him.

He is by 2008 Coral-Eclipse winner Mount Nelson and has a pedigree which suggests these type of conditions are just what he wants. I can see him bowling along in front under Franny Norton and he could be very hard to peg back.

4.20 Doncaster: Important Mission:

I think this horse is a Group horse masquerading as a handicapper. He has won two of his four starts and was particularly impressive at Chelmsford last time out.

Off a handicap off a mark of 81 he thrashed his 11 rivals in a fast time. Ryan Moore rode him there and he is back on board on Town Moor on Wednesday.

He does have a US dirt pedigree as he is by Group One 7f winner More Than Ready and his two wins have come on all-weather surfaces. He is, however, unexposed on turf and the sand-based Doncaster track promises to suit him well. I expect another step forward from this progressive individual and 3-1 is fair.

I very much liked the chances of another at Doncaster in Lethal Lunch, but I’m afraid we might have to wait for another day as he is a non-runner.

5.40 Carlisle - Bodacious Name:

John Quinn’s horse should be on a hat-trick, but with no luck in running last time out at Catterick he was beaten into second place when he should certainly have won.

In defeat he travelled like the best horse in the race by some way, but was shuffled back at a crucial point.

He then made up a good deal of ground quickly only to run out of gas late on in the race. With better luck and hopefully a strong gallop he has every chance of gaining compensation here in the same (0-65) grade.

His win at Nottingham over two miles two starts ago on heavy ground highlighted he was ahead of his mark and underlined that he is a strong stayer. This event over 1m6f on soft ground should be perfect for the son of soft-ground performer Famous Name.
