Our man Dave Nevison has three worth considering for Wednesday's action at Thirsk and Epsom Downs, with both meetings live on Racing TV.
3.33 Thirsk: Arantes Nascimento
Gemma Tutty is fast becoming recognised as an up and coming trainer with an ability to improve horses she gets from other yards, and Arantes Nascimento is a recent example based on three runs for her so far.
To be fair, the four-year-old arrived at his new yard on a mark 4lb lower than his previous win, but Tutty has been quick to get him back on the up. He ran well to be placed over 6f on his first two runs this season, but improved for the step up to 7f on his latest start and probably would have won if he had not had a troubled passage through, but ended up getting beat less than half a length to be third.
That was an amateur’s event and Tom Marquand takes over today, which is a hugely eye-catching booking. I expect Arantes Nascimento to break his duck for his new yard.
4.03 Thirsk: Patontheback
Patontheback may well be able to land the second division of this 7f handicap for Gemma Tutty, with Rowan Scott in the saddle this time.
The gelding made a stuttering start to the 2024 season, but hit form in June and July, winning a couple of handicaps and running well for a while. He has made a similar inauspicious start this year, but has dropped to a mark a couple of pounds lower than his latest win and may well be poised to score again.
A wide draw is no hardship for me around Thirsk and Scott was on board for both wins last term, so knows the gelding very well.
9.00 Epsom: Miss Collada
Miss Collada has had excuses on a couple of her recent runs and has dropped 7lb since she reappeared in April, whilst showing at least enough to suggest she can win off a mark of 73, especially in a modestly contested event such as this.
She needs to be better at the start than last time, but she ended up finishing third in that race at Newmarket over 6f. She ran really well off a higher mark over today’s trip when fourth three runs ago and, if she gets things right this evening, she is well capable of scoring.
