Wednesday tips: Dave Nevison's best bets at Nottingham

Pique' won this race last year under the same jockey and returns to Nottingham off just a pound higher mark.

Things haven’t always gone well for the Fanshawe-trained filly, but she clearly likes this track and time of year, and is also back on softer ground here having disappointed over shorter on the all-weather last time out.

The four-year-old ran what was probably her best race this season on her penultimate start on soft ground over today’s trip, getting beat just one and three-quarter lengths in a decent field, and I believe she in better form than her latest run suggests.

Navagio races on soft ground and put up his best effort this season last time having dropped down to this afternoon’s mark. He would not have to improve much further to land this 0-80 grade handicap.

He definitely seemed to appreciate racing in this, the lowest grade he has contested since joining James Horton, and with the addition of cheekpieces as well as the usual tongue strap, I am hoping for further improvement this time (he was badly out of form when tried previously).

The six-year-old has dropped 19lb since coming over from Ireland, but looks capable of scoring now.

Nottingham is a happy hunting ground for Mick Appleby and, after hosing up in a match on just his second start for the yard, High On Hope can land a competitive race for his new trainer.

The three-year-old had a run of seconditis before joining Appleby and carried on in that vein on stable debut when getting no luck in running and finishing third at Thirsk. He probably should have been second there and had subsequent winners behind him.

I am predicting a good winter for High On Hope and, with a clear run through, I expect him to go very close in this race which looks like it will be run at a pace to suit him.
