and Hassett are about to crash out of the race (Healy Racing) There was a remarkable late twist to the mile race for two-year-olds on the third day of the Killarney Festival when hot favourite Green Triangle threw away victory in the final strides.
The juvenile, trained by Joseph O’Brien, was sent off at 11/10 to follow up a win at Roscommon last time out and was several lengths clear, with victory in the bag, when he jinked left and crashed through the plastic running rail.
He had also collided with the rail a little earlier, giving a hint of what was to come.
In hindsight, jockey Wayne Hassett will have regretted using his whip in the final strides, when clear, which caused his mount to veer left.
More than £11,000 was matched on Green Triangle at 1.01 in-running on Betfair. "An astonishing finish," said race commentator Jerry Hannon.
Both horse and jockey were fine but supporters of the market leader were left licking their wounds, although Paddy Power announced they had refunded (as a free bet) all single bets on Green Triangle.
