Betting expert Dave Nevison likes the look of a trio in action at Newbury on Tuesday evening.
6.05 Newbury: Saariselka
Ed Walker’s filly has been ambitiously campaigned in hugely competitive handicaps at Royal Ascot and Newmarket recently and didn’t run too badly, but she will be much better suited by the calmer waters of this 0-85 grade contest.
She ran second in two similar grade events before she was upgraded and showed she was well up to winning one on both occasions.
Saariselka was beaten a head last time at this level, and is only 1lb higher here. Moreover, she won at
Newbury last season and jockey Kieran Shoemark had a decent Goodwood, so there are plenty enough positives to back her.
7.15 Newbury: Connie’s Rose
Connie’s Rose has been beaten off this mark on her past three starts but a combination of a low draw (huge advantage at Newbury) and a potential easy lead makes me believe she can hang on for a win in this.
A closer look at her recent efforts shows that she has twice come up against progressive types, plus she stumbled and lost her shoe on her penultimate start, so each defeat can be upgraded a little.
7.45 Newbury: Deep Water Bay
Deep Water Bay is an obvious selection here, being a Sir Mark Prescott-trained stayer who has started life in handicaps off a low mark.
He has already won three handicaps and even though his mark has risen 21lb, from an initial rating of 59, it could be the handicapper has still not caught up with him.
His latest win came over this course and distance, and he won with authority despite the narrow wining margin.
