4.00 Kempton: Grand Traverse
Although he has won on turf both in France and since coming to these shores, Grand Traverse very much looks as though he is going to prove best on an all-weather.
He made it 2-2 on artificial surfaces when he won tidily over this course and distance last time out, and a 5lb penalty may not stop him following up a week later.
This race coming the day before the big York meeting may not be a competitive as it could be and it looks a decent bit of placing by Archie Watson.
4.30 Kempton: Karthon
The Andrew Balding-trained gelding has yet to live up to the winners in his pedigree but has been running consistently well this season and the handicapper may have dropped him to a mark he can win off here.
He ran well behind a back-to-form winner at Chester last time but previously had run even better on the all-weather at Southwell and he might well appreciate a return to the all-weather here.
He hung when making a challenge and it is no surprise to see headgear applied. Hopefully, it will do the trick and Oisin Murphy rides.
5.05 Kempton: Moderna
Harry Charlton’s filly looks the interesting one here. A lightly raced maiden in a handicap for the first time, she has been gradually improving over longer trips.
However, she is dropped to sprinting for this and being closely related to a 5f winner that may be the key.
Charlton has applied headgear for the first time and booked Oisin Murphy for the ride, so clearly means business, plus Moderna has got lucky with the draw in stall 2. An improved run is very much expected.
