Trevor Whelan requiring further surgery on injuries suffered at York

Trevor Whelan is likely to require further surgery to aid a complex recovery from injuries suffered in a fall at York in September.

Whelan sustained several fractures during the accident, in which Jim Crowley was also hurt, and has already had his ankle reconstructed, with extensive physiotherapy and most probably further surgery required for him to regain use of the joint.

A statement from the Professional Jockeys Association on X said: “Trevor sustained multiple fractures to his right ankle following a high-speed fall at York racecourse in September 2025. This was a complex injury and, following initial local treatment, he was transferred to a specialist centre in London where a team of surgeons undertook an ankle reconstruction.

“The bone healing progressed well but, not unusually, he required a further operation to address extensive scarring around the joint. He has worked very hard with the IJF physios to regain the movement needed for race riding but this is still some time off. It is therefore highly likely he will need further surgery during 2026 which will significantly delay any return to riding.

“Trevor would like to thank the team at York, the medical professionals that treated him, the IJF’s Oaksey House team and everyone else for their continued support.”
